I run my Defrag program,it runs for a few seconds then stops and says it can not continue. It suggests running Scandisk program with the "Through" option.I do what it asks, scandisk returns with no errors.I try again to run Defrag, same thing happens and gives me an error message "ID# DEFRAG006".
What can I do fix this basic problem?

Here are some tips from VTesh on 04/03/99 to a similar question, ammended and
much condensed."...allow Disk Defragmenter to continue as long as the hard disk light is being
accessed."In Win98 the Defrag may seem to hang at the start, continually restarting. This
may be
due to a feature which moves your most used files to an area on the HDD to
speed up their
accessability. Be patient...Otherwise, do some prep work such as:
Turn off screen savers
Empty the Recycle Bin
Empty your browser's Cach/history folder
Delete *.tmp and *.chk files from the HDD
The Auto-Insert Notification option may need to be deselected
Run "End Task" on all programs (except Explorer and Systray),
....especially
schedulers, crash guards and virus scanners.
Run a "Thorough" ScanDisk preferably in Safe Mode or MS-DOS
....then defragment the drive. As a final test, in "F10" choose "English", TEST/Diagnostics, Hard Drive.
"Good luck, VTesh" ( &rwd )
