Problem re-install Win98

I re-installed Win98 SE on my laptop, directX installed but no sounds, lost few hardware cards included modem and also lost couples software like Microsoft Word, Excel, etc...... What have I done? Tried to re-installed, still no change. any ideas or should I seek an IT expert to fix it?

the sound, modem drivers etc, will need to be reinstalled.

Did you install to the original directory or let windows create a new one. Check in windows explorer to see if you have two installations of win98. Are you sure the programs are gone or just icons for them.

On installations (while retaining old one) where Windows selects the installation directory, it typically picks a name like C:\WINDOWS.000 as a target, then just "automatcally" selects it on startup.
When this happens, programs that seem to have vanished are still there, they just haven't been linked to the new directory.
