Problem Installing IE SP1

Comment:
During a Window's Update session of IE SP1, power was lost to the machine during the install of SP1. Now when I boot up the machine I get a "Explorer has caused an illegal operation and will be shut down" message in the GUI. AVG 6 was running during the install process. Any help restoring my machine would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Perhaps the easiest solution would be to boot into DOS and run the command
scanreg /restore
Then, on the prompt, choose a date that states it was started properly as this will be before your problems...computer will work after but you may lose download...try updating again and see if it finds your files in the update folder, you might be lucky!

Jizumonkey.... thanks for the suggestion. Restoring the registry had no effect. Any other suggestions?

Hit the power button and hold down the left Ctrl key to start the PC to the Start menu.
Select Safe Mode.
Reinstall SP1 (whichever one it was, IE6 I presume)
With that being said; can you tell me how it lost power during the install? Your 4 year old hit the switch on you to get your attention or you waited for a lightning storm to install SP1 or? Perhaps I am nosey or just want to avoid a similar mishap.

Just a freak mishap. We had high winds that day and the power surged just as I was doing the install. Well, without bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...heh. Anyway, as an update, I put the hard drive in another machine and pulled the data I wanted off of it. Then did a clean install of XP. I guess I didn't have the patience this time to troubleshoot it. Thanks everyone for your help.
