I am currently running win '98 on my desktop pc. For some time now, when I try to extract files in an archive that has an executable program for win32 in it, my computer freezes up. If an archive has a dos-based .exe file, there is no problem extracting the file to another folder. It only seems to be a problem with .exe programs written for windows. All the other files in the archive will extract, just not the .exe one. Any ideas on what the problem might be? I suspect that there might be some conflict with other windows-based programs on my hard drive.

What kind of archive files? ZIP? What's the error you are getting?

They are .zip archives. I've used both WinZip and PKZip and I get the same results for both. What happens is that the program starts to extract the files to the folder I choose, and all goes well until it hits the .exe file. At this point, extraction basically comes to a halt and the computer locks up. I generally have to reboot by turning the computer off and then on again. And if I attempt to go into the folder where part of the archive has been extracted to, the computer freezes up again and I have to reboot. But this only happens if the .exe file is meant for windows. Dos files in archives extract just fine. Any ideas?

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. WinZip or PkZip don't differentiate between different types of files. The only think that makes any sense at all to me is bad files and a very strange bunch of coincidences.

Create a New desktop folder and try extracting them to that folder. (an empty folder)

On a side note...
Was the .zip received via email on Outlook with the security patch installed on it?
If so then have the sender, resend it but have them rename the .zip extension to .doc before sending it and then once received, save it to your desktop.
Right click on the desktop icon and rename it to .zip and try again.

I am having a similar problem in Win98. I download a self-extracting file and double-click it. It starts to extract and then hangs the PC. Also had this problem in Windows Update. It downloads fine, starts to install, then hangs. (NAV not running.)

This used to work prior to DSL ext. modem and VPN connection.

Any ideas?

FYI - I found my problem. One of the DIMMS was not completely in slot. I re-seated it and all is well.
