Restart your computer in safe mode. Run defrag. If it still hangs, run a thorough scandisk. Then run defrag again.

1.Windows 98.Forget all you've ever read - incl. Safe Mode - there is only one way that works faultlessly for me:
Start>Run - type msconfig - Enter

On GeneralTab check Selective Startup then uncheck ALL options listed under selective startup.

Hit OK to restart with only the absolute basics running. Run Defrag serenely.

When finished re-run msconfig to specify normal startup.

Thanks to the only source of wisdom that knew the answer:
www.windows-help.net/windows98/troub-29.shtml
which also gives the 95 equivelant
