Printing large web page in IE5.5

I need to print of a number of labels from information in my web database. I generate a single large (~3M) web page of labels in the correct format. When I use the file->print menu options the print dialog box takes about 1 minute to appear. When I check the printer etc and press print, there is a lot of disc activity for 20 minutes before the printer starts printing. This is on a twin processor workstation - the end users have fairly low powered machines so this delay will be at least twice as long.
Questions - What is causing this delay? Any ideas to get around it?
