What type of ink cartridge is being used? Original or refil? I have the same problem with non-original ink cartridges. Is the cartridge near 'the end' i.e. little or almost no ink left in the cartridge? I find it gets worse at this point.
"Nice link to Brother printers. Possibly - if it is an ink jet - the paper is touching the heads as it moves accross the page. One of the small holes in the cartridge could be malfunctioning.
Curious - What caused the jumble in your post? [did you mean to drop a link to brother?] "

You didn't post about Outlook.pst as well?
Both cartridges are new. I would definately check the paper feed - the print head shouldn't touch the paper.
Check the drainage well under where the cartridges rest. It could be full of half dried ink, which is contaminatting the bottom of the cartridge
Print an item. I would select high quality as the head passes over the paper more often. Sometimes you can lift the lid a fraction without being detected. Note if the paper is reacting to the head passing over it. To the side under where the cartridge sits should be a tray. Feel with your finger if you can. I am unfarmiliar with the epson but it should be similar to other inkjets.
How did the link end up on your original question? I ask since if you didn't intend too, the printers'problem may be only a symptom.
Just that it was a brother link. You had an epson.
Another forum had the same sort of thing except it was a broadband link and didn't really tie in with their question. I was begining to think a new sort of agent was at work.
I would try printing say a line of small yellow dots in the middle of the page. That is one dot per line. Then observe - does the black smear over the paper or is it in the form of narrow fine lines.
OK Forget about the dots. Just pick a wordpad document that's about a couple of pages long. Select the entire document and change it from black to yellow. [format /font go down to color /pulldown menu choose yellow]
Then print it - it will be all in yellow. What sort of black lines do you see? Are they precise fine lines or does it look like ink smeared across the page instead. Smeared/smuged ink come from where the cartridge touches the paper.
Then wipe the bottom of the cartridge with soft absorbent paper carefully/gently. Print again and see if there is a change.
COOL - ok the yellow printing is spoiled by black lines across the page. I'm guessing the black lines are not precise but look more smugged.
This means 2 things. First the paper must be sitting higher than it should or the print cariage has moved down. (That's probably too difficult to fix yourself) Seconly, some part under where the cartridges sit, must be contaminated with black ink.
I have not worked on a epson c40 but I would assume when the inspection lid is lifted the cartridges move to a position where you can insert and remove them. With a torch look at the place where the cartridges normal park. As leaks do happen there will be a tray of sorts in this "park spot"
If some else with an epson c40 would like to mention how the tray is - that would be great.
Did your last cartridge empty quicker than expected?
"SCARY STUFF" Don't touch the guide rail aka clean. Is the PDF acurate, it the printer guide that particular.
Woah!!! What a stunning endorsement NOT to have an epson. Its looks like a flimsy piece of tin for a print head guide, that you can't even gently clean.
The most resent epson I had looked at would be a stylus 500. And I like epson because they support linux too.
Looks like you may have to take it to a worksop where someone with a bit of fix up know how can correct the printer head.
