I have a Win 98 SE system. Printer is an NEC 870. No error messages.
It seems like the printer is only partially communicating with the printer:
1. Computer “knows” when printer is powered up or down. (i.e., software gives verbal cues, “Printer ready”, “Please check your printer”, etc.). This cue still responds normally.
2. Print job is sent from the cue, but no response from printer.
3. Computer not receiving feedback from printer. Print software interface normally displays total # pages printed, total # jams, etc. That info is no longer displayed.
4. Device manager display appears normal.Have verified that printer and cable work on another computer.
Have tried different cable with no response from printer.
Uninstalled and reinstall printer software – no change in symptoms.
Have removed LPT1 from device manager and it reinstalled normally on reboot – no change in symptoms.
How do I troubleshoot this?
Thanks

Have you by chance made any changes to the system BIOS values? CMOS battery failure? There are multiple parallel port settings available in the BIOS screens. I was asking about a possibility of these being changed or reset to defaults. Below is a link that may be of some help.
