Hi I have just upgraded my hard drive from 3GB to 10.2 GB (Western Digital)with Windows 98 2nd Edition. Now I have an error with the Primary IDE Device. My Acer computer was built in 1998.

Also I get this error message when I shutdown. Drive Write Error - Unable to write to disk in Drive D: Data or files may be lost.

Then this message - The Volume that was removed had open files on it. Next time please check first to see if the nolume can really be removed.

If any one can help, it would be appreciated.

Many Thanks christine.

Did the BIOS setup properly recognize the new harddrive? What does the error say in the Device Manager on the Primary Ide device?

I had a similar problem after installing a second hard drive. I ended up downloading a new driver for the Intel chip set on my mother board because the Microsoft driver wasn't doing the job. Everything works fine again. You might try some other easier suggestions first but this is what I ended up doing.

I believe this problem may be related to the Promise disk controller, and possibly also drive partitioning under Windows SE. More info at:

Problem is caused by the disk controller which needs to be either upgraded or replaced. Alternatively a bios upgrade could take care of the problem. Goto system properties in control panel check performance and you should see the drive has swithced to dos compatabilty mode because of the controller problem. Click on any line and you will get further explanation . To fix the problem goto the bios screen and check that the (for award bios) that disk recognition is set to auto, found under the first selection. This generally works another solution is to check Dma in the system properties for the disk drive.
