Hi folks,
I had just upgraded to Pentium III and Win 98. I checked my Systems Properties / Device Manager, I get a yellow exclamation mark on my Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo). I check its properties and there are no conflicts. Everything seems to work fine except for (1) My Floppy drive does not work, the system will hang if I try copying files from/to Floppy (2) First time access to my Zip drive takes more than 2 minutes. Can anyone enlighten me on what to do?
thanks

Casey, as for the floppy check your cable connection. Maybe you loosened it when you replaced the processor. As for the zip drive, more then likely the LPT port (if is an external ZIP) is set to bidirectional.
Try changing it to a standard port and see what happens.

I have the same probleme. I just bought a ZIPcd and it doesn't work and my CD doesn't work either.
Please help

Hello,
I've got the same problems. My cdrom does't work, everything is connected like it should be.
Will the problem be solved when I format c: and reinstal win98.p.s. the problems started when I changed the harddisk.

Hi, i have the same problem as Ramon, my cd-rom doesn't work as well. but this happened when i changed my cd-rom. It pisses me off when i have to format my computer everytimes this happens.. so if anyone can help me.. please e-mail me at Imortal_dragon916@yahoo.com thanx

I have the same problem but in my case the only thing i notice different is the shutdown screen not showing "Standby" as an option and in the performance tab under System Properties says something about dos compatibility mode.
This is the report i get on Problem Devices:Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)

Can anyone help?

I have almost exactly the same problem!!! It's amazing, but I don't think the solution is forthcoming here seeing as though y'all have written in and got no reply.
After adding a new 17 gig hdd, I got problems with both primary and secondary ide controllers, and the FDC controller, this has had an effect on my CD rom drives (they're no longer there when windows starts up).. PLEASE GIVE ME SOME RESOURCES MAAAN.. I GOT SOME GAMES I CAN'T USE BECAUSE OF THIS, besides all the other worries I got about losing the stuff I got on here.

I Has the same problem when I installed a New Hard drive (Primary IDE controller (dual fifo) had an exclamation)and neither my CD Rom or CD burner were being recognized by Windows 98. The problem I had was that even though I had configured the Master and Slave jumpers properly, I had the drives in the wrong order when I connected them to the IDE port on the motherboard. Reversing the order in which they were connected solved the problem. However I just had a major crash, and guess what it's back. I've tried everything I could think of to fix it but have fallen short. Luckily though the yellow box is all I have this time.
I'm curious, could we all be running the same brand PC or motherboard I have a PB 851
300Mhz 64MRam

Gee...
I have the same problem as Roger... I guess nobody has the answer :((( If so many of us have this problem.. I wonder why Microsoft doesn't have the answer in it's help file. They don't listen to us, do they ?
If I fix this problem, I'll put a solution up here.Cheerio folks.

Oh.. sorry.. I meant that I've got the same problem as Ramon. I installed a new Western Digital hard disk and hey.... my cd-rom drive was not recognised by windows98 despite the fact that my cd-rom is detected on bootup. ( I also installed windows using the cd-rom. Funny it doesn't recognise it)
Anyway, I managed to get the cd-rom working, although the exclamation mark still exists. Perhaps reinstaling windows at this point could do the trick. But I have yet to try it. Here's what I did :
I noticed that my hardisk and cd-rom were connected using the same cable. The cd-rom was the primary slave, the hard disk the primary master. Although this worked fine with my previous hard disk.. for some reason, it doesn't work now. Probably the hard disk is a bit too modern for windows to fully understand it... and it's confused.
So, I decided to take away this confusion by using another cable to connect to the cd-rom.
Hence, I now had a primary master(hard-disk) and a secondary master(cd-rom, each connected to a separarate cable. You will need to change the jumper settings on u're hard-disk before doing this, or u will get a Disk boot failure on startup. I changed my hard disk settings to "single".Guys, I hope this has helped. ALthough I get the feeling that most of you would have solved this problem already. I will try to fix up the exclamation thing next. Do tell me if the trick works for you. :)

Hi Guys;
Check this link out. http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/ideinfup.htm Although it is geared toward win 95 it is relevant for win 98 also. Check if your computers are using Intel Motherboards with 82371SB Components. If that's the case these guys may have the soultion.Tai

There is a registry key that keeps you in D.C.M. Hkey_local_machine-system-current control set-services-VxD-IOS-then delete the noIDE key. Then be sure that the check box for "disable all protected mode drivers" is not checked.

I have the same problem, but before I discovered that in Control Panel/System, When I turned on my computer, It stopped at an error message ststing: "enter setup to select clock..." I forget the rest. But it gave me an option to continue w/o changing anything. I thought it might be helpful.

Ok. I remember the error message. It was "enter setup to set clock ratio" so I went to BIOS Setup, and changed the clock speed. It was set at 466Mhz, and I changed it to "Manual" and I saw that it was 66x7.5 which exceeds the 466MHz limit. So I cahnged it to 66x7.0 and that did it. No more error message, and when in Windows, no more Primary IDE Controller error. Hope this helps...

I upgraded my old junker notebook to windows 98 and I have this same problem. I did finally get my CD-rom to work by changing the config.sys and autoexec.bat files and adding a few lines about the CD, can't remember now exactly what I did. I still have the problem with the primary and secondary IDE controllers. I have three controllers listed in the device manager, 2 have the big exclamation point and (fifo) behind them, then I have another that describes itself as the Standard Dual PCI IDE controller that shows up as working properly. I have a lot of system freezes and Windows protection errors now, although sometimes my computer boots and runs just fine even with the exclamation points. I sure would like to get rid of them. I am sure this has something to do with the reason my CD rom wouldn't show up at first because it is the slave. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

I had a very similar problem to all of you that resulted in me not seeing the CD ROM drive. The system panel had an exclamation mark next to the Primary IDE controller, the Secondary IDE controller, and the CD-ROM srive.
I was able to fix it by doing the following:
1. First entry under Hard disk controllers is "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE controller. Click on that (it may be slightly different for you)
2. Click on the "properties" button
3. On the settins tab, change the dual IDE channel settings to "Only primary IDE channel enabled".
4. RestartMy setting was default so other settings such as "Both IDE channels enabled" may work. This may not be a solution for you is you have devices on the secondary channel.
But this fixed my problem and I'm happy. I hope this helps someone else.

I got the same problems a few days ago. Suddenly (the system was working properly up to now) I found the CD-ROM is no more available on my system, and, after some investigation, I found a "code 10" error in the Primary and secondary controller.
As this subject is a bit old, may you please let me know if you found a solution?
I tried all the suggestion I got from the discussion, but I have not been able to fix the problem.

*solution* Ain't this thing one of the biggest pains in the ass? And you want a solution, well be prepared to spend a long time fixing this sucker. What is happening is purely driver related. Either the primary or secondary IDE device needs and newer or is missing an INF. Now that bad part is you've got to search for it and it's device specific, meaning different hard drives different INF's. Took me about 6 hours before it was running.
Alternatives:
Go online, if you can, and download the latest drivers for all your devices. Format the drive the OS is on and re-install the Operating System. (Sure this method is lengthy, but trusty).or
The fastest way to fix this, if you're having the problem I had which is you can access the hard drive, but your cdrom drive is no where to be found, head for the config.sys file in your computer. The fact that there is this problem with the "dual fifo" doesn't (shouldn't) hamper your computers performance whatsoever. One of the best ways to find a problem in your congifg.sys file is to do step by step configuration. To do this, when your computer is booting up, before the Windows 9x page appears press and hold down the F8 key. This will bring up a dos menu that will allow you to make choices of boot style. Choose step by step configuration. You will be asked yes or no qestions. About 4-5 questions in you will be asked the config.sys question. Say yes. If there is an error, and I'm guessing there is, it will tell you here. If it says there is an error but doesn't say what the error is, re-start your computer by pressing ctrl+alt+del and holding down the F8 key as mentioned above. This time choose to boot into DOS. It should be choice number 5. This should tell you there is a problem in the config.sys file and what line there is an error on. Now that you're in DOS, use the editor to edit the config.sys file by typing
edit config.sys
This will open the config.sys file with strings of information. Odds are you can go ahead and delete the line that has the error in it.Well there you have it. Good luck.

for correct yelow exclamation in dual fifo ide edit regiter windows copy key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\hdc\000x identic at show in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MF\CHILD0000\PCI&VEN_1039&DEV_5513&SUBSYS_55131039&REV_D0&BUS_00&DEV_00&FUNC_01 in driver "hdc\000x" ,repeat for second fifo. Ok!!!

Can someone tell me where to get drivers for an IDE Primary Controller for a standard HD.
I would very much appreciate the help.
Cheers

i dont know what im doing first of all i have 2 hard drive and a cd-rom and a cd-burner...so i cant use it im guess cuz in my hard disk controllers then is an exclamtion on primary ide controller (single fifo)...and on standard bus mastering ide hard disk controllers where it says standard dual pci ide controller has no thing wotng i guess but im haveing a big problem and i need som help does any hard dis controllers need to b in there?? cuz wheres my secondary ide controller single fifo???????

Just like all of you...except I wasn't upgrading anything...it just happened while surfing the net...got blue screen error and on reboot...had no CD ROM or Internal Zip. Don't know what this is or if it will work..haven't tried...but found this reference and thought it was worth passing on. Only problem is...I can't access my Win 98 CD cause the D drive is not recognized. Will see if I can do it manually but it might help some of you that haven't lost your CD ROM.

I have the same problem as all of you. It looks like most of us has Win 98. Could this not be the problem!!!
I am close to giving up hope!!!
HElp

I am having pretty much the same trouble as all of you. I upgraded the hard drive to a 15 gig and everything was fine in windows 98. Once I upgraded to Windows 98SE I have the same error in the Device Manager. A yellow exclamation in front of the Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo). I have gone to Intel and downloaded the upgrade for the 810 chipset and that has had absolutely no effect. Everything works, both hard drives that are on the primary IDE controller and the zip and cd-rom on the secondary IDE controller. I have to agree with the consensis that it is a windows 98 problem, and you would think that with this many people having the same error that there would be a fix. I checked the suggestions above about the registry, but neither really apply, what they say to delete isn't there or what to check to see if it matches does. Help! I am about to give up also!

I am having the same problem after adding a new HDD. Originally I got an error that said that there were new devices added to the IDE controller that were in conflict with the 32bit access and the the "child" was running in an older version and that the item would be disabled to stop corruption. When I rebooted, low and behold my CD was gone and the yellow exclamations were there...This is what I have found out so far: It is driver related....PCI Bus Mastering. One article I read said that the drivers are specific to both the motherboard and the chipset. WONDERFUL I have been searching for the correct drivers and have been unlucky so far. I will let you all know when and if I do and the results. Wish me luck!!!

i have the same prob too, how can i re-install win98 if i can't get my cd rom drives to work. please help someone.
thank you.

Ok I just bought a new cd rom to fix the problem and it worked... but when u do it and restrat after installing it it may say somethin about cd rom not ready and a bus master or somethin wat ever that bus master is goin in and fool wit the drivers for it.and then after that i sestarted and presto there was my cd rom (may need windows 98 cd for the driver thing) just when u fix the bus master drivers to select to look for a new one check off D: and windows update are checked off (to fix drivers look in system device manager, i bought a cd rom from best buy that was on rebate for $30 its pretty good) if u need more help email me or IM on AIm at sk8busta14

I used to have the same problems as you people. What I did was went to the device manager tab, then hard disk controllers, and removed them, and then restarted my computer. Then windows detected new hardware and installed it. Then I went back to the hard disk controller tab, right clicked on my intel..., and went to properties, then settings. On mine, I had to set the setting for "Both IDE channels enabled." I hope this will help you people a little. E-mail me for any questions.

OK THE FREAKIN EASIEST WAY!!
Get a windows 98 upgrade cd, u need the upgrade cd so u dont lose ure HD data the non-upgrade will wipe ure HD. U can Use any Win. 98 Upgrade disk ure friends or a store bought.
Whatever it is, it will work it will reinstall all ure drivers
and leave all ure data and fix the problem
Thats wat i did and now eveyrhting works and im up and burning again.
The problem is mostly on the 1st win 98 version (Beta) which has many problems. So any old win 98 upgrade cd will do the trick
Ure all very welcome
I gurantee this is the easiest way and least complicated way to fix it and will work 100% sure (fixed 18 comps wit it)

Same problem with Win 95. Happened after I re-formatted and installed 95 so I wouldn't recommend re-formatting. I tried deleting noide key in registry but it didn't help. Also notice two unknow devices (connected to controller) in other in device manager but MB and win95 drivers wont update them.

Hi,
I had this problem, and the way i fix that is this..
My CD-ROM was on slave on the second IDE port and windows98se was giving an erro...so i changed the jumper to master and reset the BIOS to default, and it fix the error in windows 98 control panel - system
Chow...

I had a similar problem. I had upgraded to the BrillianX 1S/2000 and after reboot I had a yellow exclamation mark next to my Floppy Controller, Primary IDE Controller, and the Secondary IDE Controller. After trying all of the above and having no luck, I went to My Computer Properties, Performance, File System, Troubleshooting, and I checked all the Items to see if it would have any effect. After reboot the exclamation marks were gone, and none of the boxes were checked under Troubleshooting. I downed the system and restarted and still no problems. It appears to have cleared up. Go figure.

I know what's wrong!
We're all using Windows... The best programed O/S on the market! .... ummm yeah.
I can't wait till Linux gains some compatibility and becomes easier to manage and install.
Win-blows,
Mike

according to Intel, and most of us have the Intel motherboard...
Some versions of Microsoft Windows* 95 & 98 may not recognize the IDE controller on Intel motherboards using the 82371SB PIIX3 or 82371AB PIIX4 component. This can cause the BIOS to disable the secondary IDE channel, resulting in IDE devices (such as CD-ROM drives) not being detected or disappearing after the system is rebooted. The PIIX3 and PIIX4 components are not included in the list of IDE controllers in the MSHDC.INF file shipped with some versions of Windows 95. During installation, these versions of Windows 95 see the IDE functionality but can't identify the exact controller type.
go to site and download utility...
http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/IDEINFUP.HTMhope it works for you

oh yea...
I needed winzip to extract the zip file.
Also during installation it asks for the Win98 CD. But the CD is not available! Just press cancel and it won't install those particular devices but will install the HD controllers. When the computer restarts go to device manager and delete the system devises with the exclamation that it could not install. restart the computer and now it will prompt you for the Win98 CD and you will be able to complete the installation because the CD will be visible. My CD drive was visible from the beginning, I needed the system to see my zip 100, but during the installation it removes your secondary HD controllers so none of them are visible.

Try this fix method:
Go to windows start and run the program regedit. Type in regedit in the run box.
Open these folders:
* Hkey_local_machine
* system
* currentControlSet
*services
*VxD
*IOS"Delete the noIDE key". Then be sure that the check box for "disable all protected mode drivers" is not checked.
It worked for me...

Well, I was just on the phone with Microsoft tech support for this very issue, searching here while on the phone with them. They suggested a few of the fixes that were suggested here, such as the NoIDE key and the verifying the setup in the INTEL controller set for IDE enabled. We also went into troubleshooting tab, on the System Properties page in the performance tab, under file system, and made sure disable all 32 bit drivers was not selected. It was, we unchecked it, rebooted, and everything is HUNKY DORY!!!!! Hope this helps someone.

Today I had an error while copying
a file from one hard drive (D) to another
hard drive (E). During it the screen froze,
so I rebooted. After this, the E drive was shown in Explorer
as a Removeable Drive, and couldn't be accessed. My device manager shows GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 47
as having failed. When I get more info on it,
the device status says that the device is not
working properly because a device it depends on,
Primary IDE controller (dual fifo) has been
dynamically disabled.Under Hard Disk Controllers in System Properties.
I have:* Intel 82371SB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
* Primary IDE Controller (dual info)
* Secondary IDE Controller (dual info)A yellow exclamation mark is displayed beside Primary
IDE Controller (dual info). When I reboot the machine,
the following is displayed:"Detecting IDE Primary Master - Quantum Fireball ST6.GA
Detecting IDE Primary Slave - Quantum Bigfbnt TXZ-0PT
Detecting IDE Secondary Master - Mats---a CR-588"After this, the screen freezes for a while, and then the following error msg is displayed:
"Primary Slave hard disk fail"
The boot can then continue as normal, but
Drive E is not accessible.
Any idea what i should do?Thanks,
Paul.

The problem that causes the exclamation point next to the master, primary and secondary IDE controllers is the motherboard chipset drivers. These drivers need to be downloaded from the manufacturer. These drivers rarely ever come with the computer's software.

I had an exclamation mark next to my Primary IDE controller and in my case it was because of the qdi motherboard which had RecoveryEasy built into it. It stops Windows from being able to do some of its stuff. To get into it, once windows is loaded, the only way seemed to be to enter the BIOS, leave it and then hold down CTRL BACKSPACE and F12 to enter RecoverEasy. F12 toggles between the two screens and then set 'ATTRIB PAR' to ENABLED. Since it resets each time the machine is booted, I had to do it twice, once to get windows loaded and once to get rid of the exclamation mark.
I hope this helps.

I had the exclamation marks on both, etc..turned out I had a stealth virus in my MBR. cleaned it and it works fine.

None of these solutions work, and the Windows ME OS does not support the Intel Driver utility. (it says that the ME os supports the chipset already!)
Anyone have a WORKING solution??

I have a via chipset with the asus A7V motherboard running a Duron 700. Everything was fine - no problems with my system which was running 1 quantum standard IDE fireball drive, and 2 CD ROMS on the second IDE port -
Just yesterday I bought a fujitsu UDMA66 drive and installed this as the primary master. I set the quantum as primary slave then copied the partitions from the slave to the master (using drive copy from powerquest)
Windows loaded (and still does) without any trouble at all - but every so often it freezes without warning - then comes back to life about 4 minutes later. I checked in devices and as with Paul Moloney's problem - the Generic IDE HDD 47 controller is disabled - and it says the reason is that the Primary FIFO has been dynamically disabled.
The Primary FIFO hasn't been touched but has the exclamation mark next to it anyway. THe wierd thing is despite all these problems all the hard disk drives are accessible - its just the computer locks up occassionally. I have tried removing all the FIFO controllers - but as soon as I click remove the PC locks up completely, and when I restart they are still there. OH - they have a parent device which is
"VIA's Bus master IDE controller"
I have all the correct drivers loaded for the motherboard (I set it up from scratch) and as far as I am aware there aren't any newer ones. I don't know what to try next!!!
(I have looked at all the reg hacks on this page but none work).

Have the same problem. Yellow exclamation mark on "primary IDE controller (dual fifo)".
I have 2 HD and 2 CD. For each controller HD is master nd CD slave.
Sometimes after boot I see 2 CD's and no exclamation mark, and sometimes I see no CD at all.
On the same machine I have Linux (it is dual boot), and when I boot as Linux, have no problem with CD's. Linux always recognize both CD's (and no crushes at all), so I have no doubts that Win is a problem and not a hardware.Zalek

Get this guys.....My computer was fine running Windows ME until I did the "update" microsoft recommends! The update was geared towards fixing 3rd party scan disk problems. Anyway after the update.
My CD-Rom and Burner disappeared. They are recognized at Boot but not in Windows.
Also, looking at the file system it says it is using a MS-DOs file system compatibility.
Will I update my ME OS again......NO!!!!!

This fix worked for me. It's quick and simple:
1. There is a registry key that keeps you in D.C.M. Hkey_local_machine-system-current control set-services-VxD-IOS-then delete the noIDE key.
2. Next, be sure that the check box for "disable all protected mode drivers" is not checked. To get there, right click My Computer and choose Properties-Performace tab-File System-Troubleshooting.

Hey! I tried the Intel website fix (response no.43) and it didn't work, but when I added Jeff's registry edit suggestion (see response no.45) it worked GREAT! Thanks Jeff! I'd love to know how you figured this out - or how the person that passed this onto you did!
I guess I shouldn't criticize those who overlook the obvious because I do too, but when you DON'T have access to your CD-ROM drive in the first place, how the hell are you supposed to use the "Upgrade with Win98 CD fix?"

Thanks to rip Response number 16 and 17. It solve my probleme with the "Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)". Simple but worth it.

response #21 worked for me - only I selected "both IDE Channels enabled" so that I could use both.
I had no registry entry called "noIDE" - and I would try response #21 before anything as it is the easiest. Good luck.

Many many thanks for response #45. After three days of frustration I tried this method and everything was back to normal after 5 minutes.

Summary: response #43 (Intel chipset driver download) was the only solution which worked for my problem.
Details: My 5 GB WD hardrive crashed and I replaced it with a Maxtor 20 GB hardrive. The hardrive installation diskette program made some setup changes though I don't know what and I'm not sure if they had any effect. Afterwards, a few times each day, especially when the computer was loaded heavily with tasks, it would hang and leave a thin green stripe about 15% from the top of the display. Investigation found an exclamation point next to primary IDE controller (Code 10) in the system information tab. No other symptoms (CDs worked ok). The register history page indicated that the primary IDE driver had been changed from a 1998 timestamp to 1996. I have two hardrives on the primary IDE and two CDs on the secondary IDE. The system is a dual-boot with Linux which always worked fine.
I tried ALL of the solutions suggested in this page. Total time ~6 hours. I thought the driver key changes might help given the registry clue but they didn't. The last thing I tried was the Intel download which is the only thing that worked. I tried to follow all of Intel's instructions but had to improvise at one point. When the file is unzipped it creates two folders Drive1 and Drive2. I ran the setup.exe program in Drive1 folder.
In response to the Linux comments seen earlier: yeah, Linux worked fine throughout but I think Linux appears superior only because Windows is so poor. Windows-only users beware: Linux initial setups can be just as time-consuming as fixing this problem. Linux setup woes are documented in HOWTO pages instead of this type of site.

After trying all of these solutions unsuccessfully, I stumbled across the fact that I have a system boot virus (on my Win98 Install disk, and hence on my C: drive after reinstalling win98 three times!) Mine was the NYB virus. I downloaded McAfee, created an emergency disk, rebooted and scanned C:, and fixed the problem.
If none of these solutions have worked for you, you might try it too, or you could just use a clean boot disk...If you have a boot disk with a clean boot sector, you probably don't need McAffee. I **think** fdisk /mbr would be effective, but if that doesn't work, you will probably have to remove the virus some other way.
Good luck, and don't pull out **all** of your hair (as I have over the last 3 days and about 30 hours working on this problem!)Oh, I still don't know how I got the virus... it showed up _immediately_ after I got my new cable modem....
J3:16

I suggest using the website www.metacrawler.com to search for drivers. It is a metasearch engine(A metasearch engine searches other, multiple search engines). It works great!

Well...
I don't got a exact problem but...
When I got the computer, my IDE disk doesn't had a good performance, then I updated my driver from the manufacturer's site (www.pcchips.com.tw) and downloaded it.. And now goes fine...
I am with a totally OnBoard Computer Devices.
A really nice tip is update your drivers, another nice site: www.driverguide.com.
I have two hard disks, one for data and one for backup, and i don't use the backup HD all the time so I turned off the secondary IDE Port. Started working really well with a nice improved performance...Oh.. and a BIOS update always helps a lot, on performance and compatibility OK?
GOOD LUCK!
