Power Button Won't Shut Off Computer

The power button on the front of my computer works fine for turning the computer on. However, if the computer ever locks up or hangs, the button does absolutely nothing. The reset switch works fine, but the power switch does nothing. I am forced to switch the power off on the back of the power supply on the computer. Any ideas?

Try holding the button in for about 5-10 seconds.

I had the same thing occur on a Compaq Deskpro EP. Turned out there were options in Setup/Bios which determined how the power button should operate.

Windows has a standby setting, which makes the computer appear dead when it isnt...you can disable this setting but I forgot how I did it...it was an option that appeared on my screen one day without prompting...otherwise you have to unplug or turn off the surge protector to turn it off/on again
