Power button is dead for shutdown

when i go to shutdown from the start menu my pc restarts instead! and if i try to shutdown via the power button nothing happens. (my pc turns on okay)

Start, Run, type in MSCONFIG. On the general tab, click Advanced (near the bottom RH corner). Put a checkmark in the "Disable Fast Shutdown" box if there isn't one there.
There's a MS patch for this as well. I don't have the link for you but the patch is; 4756US8.exe Once you run the patch, the above mentioned box becomes greyed out and unusable.

I unchecked the box and it now shuts down okay from the start menu. but still the power button is dead. however i dont mind - at least i can turn it off now. thanx

just in case you wondered, some pc's reqiure you to hold the power button for 3 to 7 seconds, others can be disabled in the bios so you can only turn on by the button, not off.
