I've been reading about DSL Services in my area, i was wondering does anyone know if it is possible if you sign up with a DSL company, can you split your connection so it goes to 2 different computers in your home? Also if this is possible, then that would probably mean the 2 CPU's share the bandwith right? and wouldn't cost extra would it? thnx

Yes it is possible, you can do a dirct connection which is through a lan cord,or you can download a program from a number of sites. It will not cost anything how ever when online your speed is basically split in two.

You can run as many pc's off you DSL as you want. But you can only run 1 at a time on DSL. The DSL company will only give you 1 IP address. If you want more you have to pay for it..........................

htp://www.wown.com aka http://www.helmig.com
(and hunt through Helmig's Networking - "Sharing one modem" and ICS issues...).
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/
is another ICS site - with useful links...
and...

http://www.everythingdsl.com/
may be of use too.
Also visit: http://www.macintouch.com and then into:
http://www.macintouch.com/accessrouterspart2.html
and read the comments on various bits of kit (DSL/cable access-routers); the D-link items get excellent reviews here... Worth your while to check out the D-link website too...

You can run more than one computer at a time on a single IP address. I currently have 4. there is a degrade in speed, but when compared to the fastest modem downloads I ever got - there is no comparison.
I installed A DSL Router switch ($139 - $179 at Fry's) between my DSL modem and computers. I have the equivelent of a LAN system, with all 4 computers operating as if on a peer to peer network. The download speed is reduced, but when compared to the best i ever got with a 56 k modem, it's a bargain..

Once again, we should know what we have...
W98se has a connection sharing app built in. No cost, no netowrk, no download. You porbably have to buy cabling. Read about in your help file. This works with any connection, but only makes sense for a DSL or cable setup.

CPU refers to the Central Processing Unit of a computer. That device has nothing to do with Internet connection sharing. Just a terminology clarification for the poster is all.

I know this is probably a very simple problem but I'm stumped. I have two computers with dsl modems. These computers are not networked. Not together at all. I thought I could connect to AOL DSL from either computer. So I turned one modem off and signed on with the other computer. Worked fine. I turned that one off and turned the other one on and it won't connect. Shouldn't either one connect if one modem is off? Confused.
