How do I find out what Port (numeric)my adsl modem is if it's connected via USB? My Nortons firewall hasn't detected ANY hack attempts since switching from Dialup modem (via serial port) To USB. This can't be set right? I'm assuming I have to manually add another port number to the "common" port list in Nortons. tnx for any info..

There are several ways, but the easy way is:
Start, Settings, Control Panel, double click on the modem icon, click the properties button, and look under the General Tab.
My port is COM 4 for example.

Thanks for the reply but it don't seem to work that way with this USB modem... com1 & 2 are the serial ports at the back of the pc & 3 & 4 are the internal equivelant if you have an internal modem? (& the actual port's used for the net are different again? (I'm a bit rusty here) Thanks again for the response though.

I already went down that route...I think it's http ports I need. There is a list of them that's covered in Nortons..(from 80 to 11543 & I can add to it) I don't know if the web uses the same http ports thru a USB modem as it did thru my com 2 dialup modem. Thanks all the same. I'm a bit lost in this area! I'm assuming there must be a different port thru USB (not being covered by Nortons)given I've no hack attempts anymore. (I used to get them daily on my dial up modem)

You are speaking of a DSL modem I presume. The ports you are referring to (Norton Firewall) are TCP/UDP ports. Norton Personal Firewall can be configured to block data coming into, and going out of your PC. COM ports/USB ports/Serial ports are different from TCP/UDP ports. Just make sure that you have the common trojan ports blocked (Norton does this by default). Also, I wouldn't allow manual configuration of firewall rules. Not as user friendly, but you can allow/disallow what you desire. No need to "set" any special ports for your DSL modem.
Norton is referring to HTTP browser ports.

Hope this isn't too confusing.

Thanks pcnurse. Yeah I know there's a difference between the ports Nortons is guarding & the others (I didn't explain myself properly to start off with..my fault! :¬)...But you seem to be referring to the right ones..Gone thru the prog & seems to have various trojan ports blocked etc..although I have mine set to manual configuration..I'll change it to auto & see how it goes...cheers again all.
