Hi
i hope someone can help me!
I have recently installed win95 on my ibm 310 laptop over the pervious installed windows 98.I install windows 95 over 98 becuase windows 98 wasnt working very well!Anyway when i install windows 95 i first tried to connect to the internet and it worked fine, all i did was install a standard 56k modem and not change anything except my username and password. But then i descided to put in the proper driver for modem because my modem made a very loud noise when it dialed up and it never used too. But when i installed the proper driver for the modem, it did not work, it came up with an error saying something like "windows cannot use the type on protols in the server settings". So i went to the Freeserve website (my ISP) to get to help and it showed me what i had to do in the server settings http://www.freeserve.com/help/id/7073_page2.htm It showed me to only tick the TCP/IP and ONLY, Use defualt ip gateway on network! But i still had no luck! I have tried getting back what i had in the first place but still no luck. i have also tried to delete everything and reinstalling everything but still no luck! But i have found out that if i set the speed to 9500 it logs on OK but i cant view any websites, and 9500 is not my modems speed, its a 56k modem!
I really hope something can help with this really weird problem because its really annoying, and its really stressing me out!

Thanks ever so much

Miles

I would highly suggest reinstalling 98 again. It's much better than 95 and it gave you no troubles connecting online.

I looked at the site you gave and everything seems to be normal settings. It can't be a problem there. Get back the 98 drivers for the modem also.

Kevin.

I'm also with Freeserve - I'm on the Hometime scheme. Can they provide you with a Freeserve dialler? This automatically sets up the Freeserve Settings on a PC.

I would suggest filling in the Primary and Secondary DNS Settings in the TCP/IP Panel. (Use the page that you gave in your post to see where to enter this info).

Select "Specify name server address". For the Primary DNS enter 195.92.195.94 and for the Secondary DNS enter 195.92.195.95. Do a restart and then see if you can connect and browse. These settings are provided by Freeserve for manual configuration - I don't know the URL off-hand. I have noticed on some some computers that if I don't enter these DNS settings I can logon to Freeserve but cannot browse the 'Net.

The loud noise you describe when using the Generic/Standard Modem Driver when you first managed to connect OK was probably just the modem's speaker volume set too high.

You could also try removing all modems from Control Panel/Modems and removing Dial Up Networking. Restart, then reinstall Dial Up Networking and install the Generic/Standard Modem Driver that you first tried.

The fastest I can connect to Freeserve with a 56K modem is 44000bps.
