Go to your c:\control panel\network.
this is what you should have in there if you are not using aol.

1) Client for Microsoft Networks (or) Microsoft Family Logon.

2) Dial Up Adapter.

3) TCP/IP.

These are the only things that should be in that box. Remove anything else.

AOL ADAPTERS AREN'T EVEN NECCESSARY TO LOG ON TO AOL... SO YOU CAN REMOVE THEM WITHOUT HARM ... GRANTED YOU DO NEED:

------------
CLIENT SOFTWARE(MICROSOFT)
DIAL-UP-ADAPTER
TCP/IP PROTOCOL

ALL INSTALLED ...
------------------

*****NOTE*****
YOU CAN UNISTALL AND REINSTALL FROM YOU CURRENT OS DISKS ... (WIN 95/98)

**MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE DISKS THAT IS THE CURRENTLY INSTALLED OS (95/98)

REBOOT WINDOWS ... CLEAN BOOT
STEPS...

1) START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/NETWORK

2) REMOVE " DIAL-UP-ADAPTER " (and any and any other dial up adapters)

3) *this step can be skipped*(not suggested to skip) RESTART WINDOWS

4) GO BACK TO THE CONTROL PANEL AND DOUBLE CLICK NETWORK

5) CHOOSE " ADD " ...

6) UNDER MANUFACTURER CHOOSE " MICROSFT "

7) UNDER NETWORK ADAPTERS CHOOSE " DIAL UP ADAPTER "

8) CONTINUE TO ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS , AND ***MAKE SURE THAT NONE ARE SKIPPED(MANUALLY)****

9) RESTART WINDOWS

10) GO BACK TO THE NETWORK ( VIA START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/NETWORK) AND DOUBLE CLICK IT...

***NOTE*** STEP 10 IS SERIOUSLY SUGGESTED FOR PROPER INSTALLATION

11) RESTART WINDOWS AND TRY IT OUT

*TOTAL OF 3 RESTARTS-WORKS BEST*

*** IF U NEED TO CONFIGURE YOUR ADAPTER (FOR ANY REASON) CHECK WITH AOL FOR THE CUSTOM SETTINGS
*** THE DEFAULT SETTINGS SHOULD WORK NORMALLY

*****************************************
*** IF YOU HAVE NO CLUE ON WHAT THIS SAYS-------- DONT TRY IT------***

I'm assuming this is AOL Version 5.0.
The latest AOL software prevents users
from dialing an ISP & will only let them
dial AOL. You need to either uninstall AOL
5 & reinstall version 4 or reinstall 5 &
when it asks you if you want AOL to be
your default browser tell it NO!
Hope this helps. :)
