When windows is booting up it tells me:
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.
The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try unistalling the associated application using its unistall or setup program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling the application to rplace the missing file.
nios.vxd
Press a key to continueThen when i continue when it comes up to the windows log on screen it give me a bunch of illegal operations and will be shut down. the programs are: Msgsys, Lcfinst, Pds. Then another window opens up, It is named DMIStart. that one tells me"Failed to launch: Intel LANDesk Client Manager". Then i log onto windows and one last Illegal operation pops up. This one is: Dpmw32. Any answers to resolve these problems would be great thank you.

The nios.vxd is not in your system.ini file. It is in the registry. Run Regedit and search for nios.vxd. Delete the stuff you find in the search.
The other errors can most likely be solved by disabling the programs from starting at start up. (run msconfig, and uncheck the programs) Then reinstall the software.
I would also recomend running a virus scan just to play safe.
Before editing the registry make sure to back it up.

have you uninstalled any apps recently and in the process deleted 'shared files'? if so re-install said app and uninstall without deleting shared files. might work.

Hi Richard,
There seems to be configuration problems here. The lengthy message you get on bootup is the standard telling off that Windows gives you when your registry (system.ini) instructs a file or driver to be executed but the file has either been moved or deleted.
So, lets try and sort that out first. Nios.vxd is a virtual device driver and is used for Novell software. you might want to check out their website for info too. I would certainly re-install the software you have by Novell. This usually cures the missing file on bootup.
As for the numerous illegal ops, see if these occure after the re-installation of your Novell software, if they do, write back with details and we'll work through them.

Vito,
I reloaded novell and it took me back to square one. I was having other problems with the computer but i managed to fix them but reinstalling novel brought those problems back. I have decided to just forget it and repartition the hard drive with ntfs and load 2000. But thanks for your time. I appreciate it. Have a nice day
