Hi vayin, hello everyone,

Either the floppy is not setup correctly in the BIOS or the bootdisk is bad.

Ensure the A: drive is set as 1.44MB device in the BIOS.

Ensure the FDD (Floppy Disk Controler) is Enable in the Bios.

Ensure that the floppy is set as the first boot device.

Be sure to save the settings before exiting the BIOS.

Try the bootdisk on the computer you are using now. Does it work on it?

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi vayin, hello everyone,

The Enable/Disable FDD setting is not within setup for all computers. Sorry, I should have mentioned that. On most computers where it is an option, it is located within the Advanced menu.

Even though you can see the files on your laptop it does not necessarily mean the disk is bootable. Insert the floppy into the laptop and see if it boots from the floppy.

You could also download a different bootdisk from here.

Do not save the download directly to the floppy. Download it to the computer and then click on the download file. It will prompt you to insert a blank floppy and then extract the files to the floppy making it bootable.

Do you see the light come on the floppy drive when you are booting up?

Does the light stay on the floppy drive all the time?

Best Regards,
Mesich

Your Dell computer maybe formatted in NTFS file system. Win98 uses FAT32 at best. The two are not compatible. You will probable need a winxp boot disk. I could be wrong but I don't think you can reformat a NTFS to Fat32?

if able to boot off a drive, type fdisk, go with large drive support, a menu comes up with 4 or 5 options depending on how many drives you have. select #3 to delete partition & select non-dos partition. after non-dos partition deleted than select #1 to make a primary active partition. after all that is done, restart system with bootdisk & select with cdrom support & go to e:drive & type setup to start loading windows 98

The message you're getting indicates a problem with the power or data cable to the drive, bad drive, misidentified drive or floppy controller not enabled.

Hi vayin, GRP, ddp59, DAVINCAPS, hello everyone,

GRP,
A WinXp bootdisk will be of no help regarless of the type of partition on the hard drive. One should be able to boot from the floppy without a hard drive installed. If the floppy isn't booting using a known good Win98 bootdisk it won't boot a WinXp bootdisk either.

DAVINCAPS,
I agree with the data or power cable not connected properly. I just checked out the BIOS settings on this Dell and sure enough no option to enable or disable the FDC.

vayin,
Check the BIOS again very closely to enable the FDC.

What do the light on the floppy drive do when trying to boot from it? Stay lit all of the time, flicker, or nothing at all?

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi vayin, hello everyone,

Looks like we were posting at the same time.

It should be F10 for older Compaq's and F1 for newer models. If the Compaq BIOS software is not loaded on some older Compaq's you cannot access the BIOS.

Mesich

Hi vayin, hello everyone

How about trying to boot from the Win98SE CD? Some are bootable and others are not. Worth a shot though.

Hi vayin,

Those all appear to be Compaq part numbers. I believe it's a Deskpro 2000 but I'm not 100% sure. I don't want to send you to the wrong download without knowing for sure.

You could slave the drive from the Dell in the Compaq computer. You could then format the drive using the /s switch making it a bootable device. Then copy the Win98 directory from the Win98 CD to the hard drive.

First we need to know if it is FAT32 or NTFS.

Take the hard drive out of the Dell and slave it in the Compaq.

Start the computer and after Windows loads, go open My Computer.

Right click on the slaved drive and select properties.

Look next to File System:

Does this show FAT32 or NTFS?

Mesich

Hi vayin,

Here is the download which might work or may very well cause more problems.
Again I am not certain of the model number of your Compaq so no guarantee's.

I have done the above procedure many times when a computer doesn't have a floppy drive or the floppy drive is bad. It will work.

You are not installing the hard drive as a Master into the Compaq.

Set the Compaq up to boot from it's normal hard drive.

Connect the hard drive that will not boot as a Slave.

Format the Slaved drive using format X: /s.

Copy the Win98 folder from the CD to the Slaved drive.

Turn off the computer and remove the slaved drive and put it back into the Dell.

Start the computer and you will be at a
C:\>
prompt.

Type cd win98.

At C:\Win98\> type setup.

Windows will now start to load.

Best Regards,
Mesich

The floppy drive in the compaq should have the same physical dimensions as the one in the Dell. It may be mounted on a bracket but all the ones I've seen in compaqs and dells were regular 3 1/2" drives.

Even if you have a problem mounting the compaq floppy in the dell you could just connect the data and power cable to the drive and leave it loose temporarily long enough to do the windows installation.

But if the main problem is the Dell floppy drive it'd probably be easier to just get another drive.

It doesn't sound like you've got it working if you're getting those messages.

If fdisk says 'no fixed disks present' the ramdrive created by the bootdisk chooses c: as its drive letter. When you try 'format c:' you get 'format not support on drive c:' because you can't format a ramdrive.

You need to verify the drive jumpers and cabling are correct. Also make sure it's properly identified in cmos and the HD channel its connected to is enabled.

It might help if you listed the steps you took up to getting the message. You don't even say which computer you have the drive installed in when getting the errors.

Obviously the compaq isn't seeing the drive. That could be because it's expecting the old drive's configuration or it could be because the drive from the Dell is too large to be seen by the compaq. How large is the drive?

If F10 doesn't work on the compaq you can download the diagnostic/setup disk from the compaq site for your model. Running that file will create a floppy bootdisk that will give you access to the compaq bios setup.

I still think the best thing to do is to replace the floppy drive in the Dell. Even if you copy the necessary files to the Dell HD, do you really want a computer with no functional floppy drive?
