Put your win 98 rescue disk in the A drive. Bott up and choose load without cdrom support. At the prompt type fdisk/mbr and hit enter. After it copies (very fast) remove the disk and reboot the computer. This will rebuild your Master Boot Record and tell your machine how and what to load.

If it comes to the crunch go to Control Panel from Safe Mode and look at your modem to see if you can spot the problem. You may have to remove the Modem entry then re-install the drivers when Windows finds it. You may even have to take the modem card out, reboot, put the card back then reboot again to jiggle it into detection.

This is the snag with scanreg /restore it can create problems if there have been any significant changes since the previous registry was in use.

My advice for the future, always try scanreg /fix first. It rebuilds the "current" registry and is 100% safe. Don't rush into scanreg /restore but keep it as a last resort. The closer you match your programs & files to the registry you are restoring the better your chances.
