My windows 98 SE is a Hewlett Packard Pavilion. It was working fine untill it crashed,so we had to erase EVERYTHING and manually reinstall everything, all is working accept my audio device we have a sound card and its installed although when I go through Entertainment to open volume control it will not open. Also when I try to listen to music it repeatedly states my sound device is messed up...PLEASE HELP
....^ Jessica....I probably need your help ASAP^....

Go to control panel and then go to system and then double click on the system icon. Once there go to hardware and then click on device manager, uninstall your audio it should be listed under sounds. Then you may have to restart your computer and then go to the HP website and download the driver for you system. Should be able to work now or unless it ask to restart your computer.

It may well be drivers as already given but also go to Control Panel/Multimedia/Audio and make sure the box "Show volume control on the taskbar" is ticked.
The following info would be useful:
1. What happens if you go to Control Panel/Sounds and test any event sounds that are set?
2. You say "states my sound device is messed up". I doubt it quite says that, so what exactly does it say?

To others reading this... You should always post error messages 'exactly'.

The above site will show you how many Hewlett Packard-Pavilion models are available. Not knowing what model you have......
Needle in a haystack comes to mind.

I'm assuming that you reinstalled from the HP System Recovery CD. If so, right click My Computer Icon, on the Desktop. Click on properties, then click on the Device Manager Tab.
Down near the bottom of this list you'll see Sound, Video and Game Controllers, click the "+" sign to reveal the devices. There should be no more than 4 or 5 listed. Right click on each of them and click remove till all are gone, then Shut down from the Start menu, and restart the Computer. This will force Windows to redetect and reinstall your Sound, video etc devices and locate and install drivers.
You should see this redetection and installation on screen, before the desktop loads.
Immediately check Device Manager again to see what's changed. Try sound system, and revisit other solutions posted here.
IF YOU DID NOT USE HP SYSTEM RECOVERY CD, ignore all of the above in this message.
Many HP drivers are on the Application Recovery CD that goes with the System Recovery CD. If you have neither, Good Luck.
Some may not be available on the NET, Hp uses lots of Proprietary Firmware and software. Depending on age of system, May still be availasble thru HP. Site listed on other post.

Hopefully she got it fixed, since she hasn't posted back with more details. :)
