My CD-ROM drive was working fine but now it has disappear from the system.
I think I might have thrown it away to the recycle bin and empty it.
Anyone know what I can do about it?

you can't throw your CD-rom away that way, just the short-cut to it.
open My Computer. Is it in there? if yes, then just right-click it and 'create short cut'.
if not, something might be wrong with the drive and you might have to replace it.
You can try 'Add New Hardware', which probably won't work, or open your case and check the connections to the physical drive. Maybe just a conection cable or power wire needs replaceing.

The cd rom drive is not in My Computer.

When I insert CD, although it won't read them, the little light will blink so problaby the connection is fine
I'll try add new hardware but I'll have to find an alternative for the win98 cd, floppy disk perhaps. Do you think it would fix it?

chech that the data cable in the back of cd-rom drive has not come loose, if it has you would still get the light flashing as power is going to it but it would not be able to read the cd you insert.

hope this helps.

To determine if it's a Windows problem or a hardware problem, Boot from a win98 floppy and see if you can access the drive from Dos. If you can't, you most likely have a hardware problem.
You could also check to see if the Bios is recognizing the drive.

If the boot disk recognizes the cdrom, then reboot the computer into windows, exit to dos and at the c:\windows> prompt type:

scanreg/restore

and return. Choose a registry to restore with a date that precedes the problem. My cdrom does that every now and then and this works to get it back.

Hi there,
If you can boot it by startup disk and it recognizes the CD rom drive, it should be the windows problem. Try to reinstall the windows and you will see the CD-Rom icon again in "My computer". In ordet to do so, try to use Recovery CD which comes with computers and use Restore option while you are bootimg the system with it. If you dont have that CD try to use a windows 98 cd to run the windows 98 setup . Let me know if you have any question by emailing me at sootedel@yahoo.com
Take care
Farid
