Alright today I was enabling a sound driver onto my Windows 95 on my IBM Thinkpad 365 Laptop. It told me for the new hardware to be installed I would have to reset my computer. So I it resets then it comes to a black screen where it says Windows 95 Starting... but thats all it doe's windows 95 NEVER starts. So I thought ok I'll boot drive it and reformat the whole thing. I tried 2 Window 95 boot disks nutta I tried a Window 98 boot disk nutta. When I try them it says I/o Error try another disk or something like that. So what can I do to get my computer back up again :( Like it won't go past the Windows 95 starting... screen and no boot disks will work. I need a boot disk that will switch to the CD rom drive if I do need to format the whole thing again. But is there a way I can fix this?

if you press F8 as it says "starting windows 95" you can get to command prompt.
Use the command prompt to copy oakcdrom.sys(a generic cd driver) from one of the boot disks, or failing that, search for oakcdrom.sys on the hdd using dir /s \oakcdrom.sysusing EDIT (as in edit autoexec.bat) add this line to autoexec.bat:
mscdex /d:mscd001
and this one to config.sys
devicehigh = c:\oakcdrom.sys /d:mscd001NOTE: I am using oakcdrom.sys as an example here there are loads of different atapi drivers in use. as far as i know oakcdrom.sys comes with the win95/win98 boot disk. when you find it copy it to the root folder. If you have no idea what i am talking about or it doesnt work then post back.

What is the exact error message when you boot with a W98 CD in the drive, and do you make it to A prompt?
There should be a W95 boot disk with CD-ROM support on www.bootdisk.com

Generally if a bootdisk doesn't work either the disk or drive is bad or the drive isn't set as the first boot device in cmos/bios setup.

Ive decided im going to just format the whole C and start over again. Can someone give mea url other then bootdisks.com with a FULL bootdisk which will boot up my CD ROM and a page which will lead me with instructions. Remember Im doing windows 95 so I need a disk that will boot up to my CD drive and I need instructions cause my memory is kinda lost from my last format :S

Ok I still need help. That page didnt help me. How do I format the C: and I need a page with a bootdisk download which will help my computer read the CD ROM none of the ones on Bootdisk.com help me at all.

www.bootdisk.com stuff should be fine as long as you choose one with CD-ROM support.
Are you aware about your CD drive letter being taken as a RAM drive? Letter for CD drive either moves up by one (eg D to E) or can sometimes be R. If you watch the screen whilst booting with the bootdisk it gives you the info.
After you have formatted you move to the CD drive in DOS. As an example, if it has moved the drive letter from D to E you insert the CD and type:
E:
setup
Even without formatting you should be able to see if it will switch to the CD drive. Assuming (again) that it moved to E then after typing E: you type dir and the files should show.
Hit Return key after all commands.
If you use Google (or whatever) there are a stack of websites that give the whole format and install procedure.

This page might help. Mostly the CD drivers on bootdisks are just fine but the first part mentions the situation where the drivers are unsuitable.

Thanks for everything you guys! I have came attached to this forum now and I will now be a active member and help people with their problems which I can answer.
What I did was get the pc formatted at a professional computer store and get more space and a wireless card in it. Might of costed a few greens but it was well spent money!

Hi DerekW, DAVEINCAPS and ham30,
I was just cruising the forum and happened to come across this post.
Some excellent advice and information offered by all of you as usual.
When I read posts like this I start missing that Win95a of mine and the challenges we used to have right here just keeping it running.
There is no doubt the advice and help I received here for my Win95a saved me hundreds of dollars in repair bills.
And, just for the record, it would have saved me 'big bucks' on this problem too.
Have a great holiday season!
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Nice to hear from you again Phil. Shame you went for that bag of tricks LOL. You had the makings of a very good 9x helper...

Hi DerekW,
Going to XP wasn't completely my idea ... my 10 year old Packard Bell had the nerve to 'konk' out on me ...lol
As for me being close to having the makings of a Win95 helper ... not in your wildest dreams! ...lol
Take care,
Phil

Then I'm just gonna have to disagree LOL.
I've heard that it's all quite straight forward on XP. Apparently there's a "Fix it" button somewhere that you just hit whenever you run into problems.

Hi DerekW,
I wondered what that 'missing button' on my computer was supposed to be ...lol

Phil
