Comment:

I just had a new pc built...an Athlon AMD 1800XP. I'm running Win98 SE.

A few days after getting it back on shutdown or restart I get an error message that reads, " pingExe" and beneath that "cannot quit". I have to hold the start button in for a minute to make it shut down. And also think this is using a lot of resources when this happens, since I checked and the were around 32%. I believe this has to do with the ethernet card?

Do you know the cause and solution for this problem? (I know, I need to call the tech who built it, but would like to know something half way intelligent to tell him.)

Thanks in advance

Go to Start/Run and type 'msconfig' & OK. Look in the 'Startup' tab for the PING. If you find it, remove the check, reboot and see if that helps.

Thanks, but that was the first thing I did, and unfortunately it is not there....back to square one.

Hello

The first trial can be at Start>Programs> >StartUp and if Ping is there, delete it.
The second chance is:
Start>Shut Down>Restart in MS-DOS mode
and type to the prompt as below:

C:\WINDOWS>scanreg
select START
select View Backups
select the oldest rb00x.cab
Restore
reboot your PC

If the oldest registry backup is more recent
than the last date when your PC was OK, then
you need the technician to fix your system.

good luck

Stefan

You could try deselecting everything in the msconfig startup tab to see if any of them are responsible.

I 've read of a Trojan that runs ping.exe, maybe you should run a virus scan. Here's a free online scan.
