i installed a software that is called eFax, and now all my pictures on my computer switched from .jpg to .efax...when i right click and go to properties, under type: it says eFax document. please help, how can i convert back to .jpg? If i open picture viewer and go to open file and select a pic. it opens fine, but if i just double click the file, it wont open because i uninstalled the eFax software and the pictures stayed as that type.

Assuming that this eFax software didn't do
anything other than just simply changing
extensions of your picture files (jpg to
efax), then it should simply be a matter of
changing the extensions from .efax back to .jpg

If this is the case, I would go to the Dos
prompt, navigate to the directory in which
your picture files are stored and use a
command such as

ren *.efax *.jpg

This should change all the file extension
which are .efax back into .jpg in that
particular directory. If you got more
.efax files in different locations on your
drive, you will need to repeat the above
ren command within each directory.

I would assume that they must have an
option somewhere in that software that
would give you control over it renaming the
extension on existing files.

I am not using Win 98 on my computer
anymore, but it seems to me that there was
an option within Windows Explorer which
would give you control over which
extensions are associated with which
application. For example .bmp with
paintbrush or .jpg with Internet Explorer.
I think the option was found under View,
File Options, Advanced. Well I'm sure that
someone else will no exactly where this
option is.

eric, Go to the link below which has file association fixes and choose which one(s)you need to fix and download the appropriate .reg file and double click it to merge it into your registy.

Note: It is good practice to backup your registry first.

eric, Please disregard my Response Number 2 as after re-reading your problem I see that the file extensions are actually changed and that fix wouldn't be applicable to your problem.

Sounds to me like you have not yet
navigated to the directory where your picture
files reside.

When you start the Dos prompt, it usually
says something like

C:\Windows\command>_

(again, I don't actually have Windows in my
computer so I don't have an example to look
at)

at the command prompt type cd..
repeat the cd command until you are looking
at

C:\

When you see the above prompt, the root
directory of you hard drive is now you
active directory. You must now navigate
your way into the directory where your
picture files are located. For example,
say your files are located in My Documents.

At the above prompt, type cd My Documents
(I'm not sure but I think My Documents may
be My Docu~1 at the Dos prompt). You can
use the dir at the command prompt to see
the Dos names for the files and directories
on your hard drive.

As I said earlier, use the cd command to
work your way into the directory which
contains your picture files, then try the
ren command. If this does not work there is
more than meets the eye.
