I don't know much about Photoshop 6, but in previous editions the only way to get a transparent background in Photoshop was to create a "Clipping Path" & save the file as .eps or .psd. Without getting into to much detail, if the background is white select all white areas with the magic wand, then inverse select, go to Path pallete, make work path, save path, Clipping Path. Save as .eps (This saves the clipping info whereas .Tif or .jpg does not) Remember that .eps files do not print well on a inkjet printers, only on Postcript printers.
If artwork is to be used in MS Word, save as .jpg & I believe that Word has a function to transparent background only on white backgrounds of a .jpg

I don’t know if this will help because I’m not sure I understand your question. You can create a new file in Photoshop with a transparent background. You can then paste onto this file whatever it is you want.
