Having taken the advice of some more informed users(thanks to DAVEINCAPS and GERARD FROM PARIS) I've met on this site, I have successfully used Spybot S&D (except for the C2.Lop problems) to scan and fix some unwanted items attached to my computer. I've heard that Pest Patrol will take it a step farther so I downloaded it, ran the scan and when I attempted to delete the files it found it told that this application was only for evaluation purposes and could not delete or quarantine items...it directed me to some other site that when I went to I couldn't find anything about Pest Patrol but I figured if I did it was going to ask me to purchase it. Is this free? If not, is it worth purchasing? ALSO...do I want to delete ALL the files it finds? AND...what is WUPDATER? It seems problematic.

WUPDATER is a virus, I have searched on Google and Spybot apparantly can get rid of it but I did not find anything specific. Have a look yourself or try typing WUPDATER in the search at the top of this forum for a possible solution.

I've never used Pest Patrol so I can't speak for it.

Some PC magazine recently rated spybot and Adaware as the best in their field. Both detect many of the same items but it's a good idea to have both on your computer. Spywareblaster is a good one too, although I've never used it:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Another good one to have is cwshredder. This is one place to find it:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

It deals mostly with home and search page hijacks.

As long as the best stuff is free, you may as well use it.

Hi funcheese, M, hi everybody,

Yes, PestPatrol is a commercial utility!

Read carefully around Spybot: there are oodles of sophisticated functions!

Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France

I just LOST the message I spent the past 10 minutes typing...DAMN. I'll cut to the chase and say that my computer is making a dripping noise (ala Chinese water torture) every five or so seconds. What is up???
The WUPDATER thing is still an issue but I need to sleep so I will get back to this in the morn.
Thanks for the assistance

I'm back to thinking that wiping out my drive and re-formatting (is that the right word) it with win98 disc

Peter,
Your situation does not need a reformat/reinstall, just a few tweaks.

Since you lost your typed post consider
KEYLOGGER

That happens to me all the time when I'm posting in Computer.net, if you open another website without minimizing computing.net it will erase your post when you go back, I lost this post twice .......LOL,

The dripping sound? Does this occur when your online and going into a website? Pest Patrol uses a 'cookie cruncher that deletes cookies being downloaded onto your computer, and if you have the sound enabled for it, then it does sound like a 'drip' , on my computer depending on the website, the drips are so abundant it sounds like a machine gun for a couple seconds. Kind of a 'wooop' , 'wooop,

Turn your sound off, do you still hear it?

If your running Pest Patrol, right click on the tool bar icon, select Cookie Patrol, then 'disable sound'\

WUPDATER REMOVAL:
Files
wupdater.exe, sui.exe, delupdat.exe

Vendor
eUniverse

Manual removal
Please notice that you must follow the instructions very carefully and delete everything that is mentioned. In most cases the removal will fail if one single item is not deleted.

Start the registry editor. This is done by clicking Start then Run. (The Run dialog will appear.)

Type regedit and click OK.

Browse to the key: click the + sign to open the tree for each folder,

'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run'

In the right pane, delete the value called updater, if it exists.

Close REGEDIT,
Restart your computer.

Now go to to >C:\Program Files\Common Files. , look inside the folder Common Files for UPDATER and delete it,

:)

Hey Thanks all
Starwaves,
I guess the drip sound IS from Pest Patrol. However, I thought I deleted all Pest Patrol files...Like I said in earlier post; because it was the unlicensed version and could not delete problem files why bother having it but it appears it is still here...hmmmmmmmm
I did see it when I went to regedit...should I delete it. I also deleted in regedit "buddyizer" and "when u save" (or when u search?) because these seem to be bogus (yes, i should wait to consult people who know more than me but I had a hunch). In my program files there is something called "ezula"... is this dangerous? and what exactly should be in Common files? I have something called designer and Odbc...

OK...so ezula Is unwanted and I'm sure I deleted this in the past. I threw it in the recycle bin but it wouldn't delete...
