Comment:

I would appreciate any ideas for optimizing XP-Pro for a performance challenged computer.

I am running XP Pro 5.1.2600 on a 433 Mhz AMD-K6-2 with 192 MB of RAM and a 6 GB hard drive. Can't do any hardware upgrades I am maxed out. Would appreciate any tricks, tweaks or tips. Also do third-party memory managers really work?

As to why I have a $300 operating system on a $200 computer: Please don't ask -- it's a long (and embarrassing) story.

Thanks.

dang them ex-wives.
the only tweak there is, go to system icon, open and choose advanced tab. the first line that says settings, open a 'dot' the line that says best performance.
its like adding an afterburner.
i set up all xp's i do that way

With your computer specs, I would downgrade your OS to Win 2K, or even Win 98.

Reply:

1.turn off all the eye candy, ie: fading, etc.
2. set your display to the lowest level you can stand, 16 bit high color instead of 32 bit perhaps.
3. disable system restore
4. check out www.blackviper.com and follow recommendations for turning off services. XP starts up something like 30+ services by default, you can easily get it down to around 20.
5. turn off indexing, you don't need it
6. turn off diskperformance monitoring.
7. you can use msconfig to disable programs from starting or just delete that entry from the registry. BACK IT UP FIRST!!
8. lots more tweaks at sites like NTCanuck and www.pureperformance.com

Maybe the XP forum could help on this.
