Computer geniuses,

I have Windows 98SE on an IBM PC. I bought this computer about a 1 and ½ ago and have enjoyed every min. of it. Until tonight (and its not really made me mad, it just puzzled me) my computer froze as I was trying to empty my Recycle Bin. So I did Ctrl+ ALT+ Delete (which I am used to doing on my Dell 4300 Dimension) and noticed a program I didn’t notice before called “pelmiced” (w/o quotes), after determining (I think) that this was the program that was locking up my machine, I did a search and found it in the windows folder on the C:/ drive. It has something to do with my mouse, although I am not sure why it is giving me trouble. What would you recommend me to do? I plan on defragmenting the computer as it has been a couple weeks.

Any futher suggestions would be very helpful

I purchased this IBM Netvista 6578-LAU for 25.00 runs perfect came with keyboard mouse which i will replace w/ optical some day and screen

A little self directed searching goes a long way - appears to be an IBM mousewheel driver - if you're absolutely certain it's the source of problems, try living without or find an alternative or update (although reinstalling the driver might be a consideration)

"I plan on defragmenting the computer as it has been a couple weeks."

Hard to see the connection - and defragging is overrated as some sort of 'holy grail'

"Computer geniuses"? (so... others need not apply?)

j/k

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.

Occasionally, legitimate files get their names stolen by nasties and put in the wrong location. I don't know if C: root is the right place for this file but I would have thought that the program files folder for your mouse would have been more likely.

Might be worth doing a search to see if there is a second copy somewhere which would be a sure indication that only one of them is legitimate.

I doubt it would hurt to temporarily disable it by renaming it to pelmiced.ex- to see if your mouse scroll stops (in which case it is likely to be legitimate). You might get an error message on startup tho.

No harm doing the odd defrag from time to time but as jboy says it won't make much difference and certainly has no bearing on this problem.

I have already renamed the file and the scrolling feature did stop. I will continue to IBM's website. Thanks again.

PS: Started to to the defrag lasted about 5mins and said it found (can't remeber what exactly it said.) but that it couldn't continue saying something like there were errors on the disk and to run scandisk. I did, it says it fixed it. It's been defraging with no problems since (about 15mins.)

If it stopped the scroll then it's very likely that it is legit.
I expect your scandisk error was what this is all about. They happen sometimes so it's worth running scandisk if you hit trouble again. Defrag won't run if there are errors on the disk.

If scandisk shows no errors next time then all is well - otherwise it's HD trouble looming.

... sorry, #4 last para is a bit misleading. It's a sign of HD problems if "bad sectors are showing" (not if it's just lost clusters).

I think it found lost clusters. I found an update for the mouse and will be downloading it. Everything else seems fine.

This is what came up the second time i scandisked it: http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/...
