Please could anyone shed some light on the following:
PCL error
Warning: IllegalMediaSourcePrinting from Excel 97 to a HP LJ 4000 series printer. The print out is received but every other page is as above.
Appreciate your assistance.

I have just about the same problem here, when printing from Excel and whant to create multiple copies of my print job than the second job gives the following error message:
PCL XL error
subsystem: KERNEL
Error: Illegal Tag
Operator: 0x1b
Positio: 812
I still haven't found a solution.
If somebody can help please e-mail me!Thanks,
Tom

Hi, we got the same problem here when we trying to print a SQR report on a NT Server machine on a HP LaserJet 4050 printer. We've installed the latests drivers from HP and the SP4 for NT. But our message differ a little bit from yours,
PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: IllegalStreamHeader
Operator: 0x0
Position: 0If anyone know whats the problem is.. we think that might be about PCL-x compatibility but we're not able to get the problem precisely. So please, if you have something, email directly to me.. thanks

ISSUE: XL error page prints out on the printer when printing using the PCL6 XL (Enhanced) driver.
Example:
PCL XL Error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: IllegalOperatorSequence
Operator: SetColorSpace
Position: 52WORKAROUND: Perform the following suggestions:
Verify printer functionality
Turn off the printer, then unplug the Parallel, Serial, or Network data cable from the back of the HP LaserJet Family printer. This will ensure that the information is not being received from the computer.
Turned on the HP LaserJet Family printer and verify that the word "Ready" appears in the printer display.
Print a Self-Test on the HP LaserJet Family printer. To print a Self-Test, perform the following steps:
Go to the control panel on the printer.
Press the "Menu" key until "INFORMATION MENU" appears in the printer display.
Press the "Item" key until "PRINT MENU MAP" appears on the printer display.
Press the "Select" button.
The printer should generate a print job.
NOTE: If garbled characters or symbols appear on the Self-Test or a Self-Test is not produced after performing the following steps, have the printer serviced.

Had the same problem when giving a print job of several pages. Printed the first view, then the PCL XL error appeared. Rebooting the (HP LJ 4000) printer worked.

my problem is with word 97 on NT. i have an ole program using vb, with a loop on the code "Application.PrintOut" for a number of copies entered on my dialog box to print a document. when the number of copies exceeds 2, the following error occurs:PCL XL error
Subsystem: TEXT
Error: FontUndefinedNoSubstituteFount - 2TTArial
Operator: SetFont
Position: 45Btw, i'm using arial and times new roman.

We Got a similar error in Word2000 going to HP8100. Tried the above fixes and no luck. The key is the printer printed everything else fine. Went back to problem PC and reinstalled the network printer and watched Word cough up a nice kernel error and everything has been fine since.

When printing envelopes from a Dos program at the end of every job it prints out a extra page with this on it:
PCL XL "Warning: IllegalMediaSource"
We are using WIN95 and i don't know what is going on

My network is all NT 4.0. This problem comes and goes. Forces users to reboot in order to continue printing to HP 4050. If they choos our Tektronix printer before reboot the jonb is OK. I have tried many thing and yet no solution. Today attempting to force printer to talk only PCL. Will let you know if it helps. Again problem doe snot happen everytime making it hard to pin point.

Our systems are nt 4.0 also. Again this problem comes and goes, forcing reboot on anyone trying to print to it. It happens in different programs not just one certain program. We are using the newest drivers for our HP 8000 printer! Any help greatly appreciated..
