Comment:

I've just installed a generic PCMCIA USB card into an old laptop. It seems to have installed the drivers for the chipset OK (Via VT83C572/VT82C586) but in device manager, I have an item called 'PCI Universal Serial Bus' with a yellow !. It claims no drivers are installed. I've scoured the internet, and don't seem to be able to find anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

Right click on 'my computer' and choose 'properties'. What does it say under 'system'? That'll tell you what version of 98 you're running.

I've noticed sometimes you have to do a second driver install with USB cards as the original install doesn't get everything you need. In device manager click on the yellow ! item and choose to install or reinstall the drivers. When it asks where to look for them, browse to the folder containing the drivers you previously used. What you need may be in a sub-folder.

The version is 4.10 1998.
I tried to install the drivers again. The drivers it did install first time round were in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, but it couldn't find any there for 'PCI Universal Serial Bus.'

I think your version of Win98 is the Original version, which had spotty support for USB. The drivers you are attempting to install may be intended for use with Win98SE.

Did the drivers come packaged with the card or did you get them from another source?

OtheHill, I think you might be right. I'm installing SE now.
Daveincaps, Windows seem to have the drivers on the Win98 CD. It just prompted my to insert the CD.

Yeah, most of the time when windows has some of the drivers that are needed for a hardware item then the manufacturer doesn't includ them on the driver disk.

Still no luck. Exactly the same problem in Windows 98 Se.
Is it possible that USB could be disabled in the BIOS? Unfortunatley I don't have the password for that.

If you need to post anything more here then start your own thread.

Try using Driverguide.com for the drivers.

"Is it possible that USB could be disabled in the BIOS? Unfortunatley I don't have the password for that."

If the laptop did not come with USB ports it doesn't have USB controller settings in the bios; if so you don't need to be concerned about that.

You can often remove the password(s) if your laptop model is old enough.

Generic 98/98SE USB drivers here - they are supposed to support most USB controllers:
