PCI Mass Storage Controller

System: PII 300 with Win 98. I wiped my hard drive last night and checked my System/Device Manager. A question mark popped up under Other Devices. Actually there were two that both read the same, PCI Mass Storage Controller. It says the driver for this device was not installed. I am not sure which device it is. I have two hard drives and two CD boxes. Everything is working as it should. Since I know at least some type of driver was installed to run my cd's when I used win98's startup disc after reformating the drive, the problem must be the hard drives. Does a hard drive need a driver???? If so I could not fine them on Quantum's nor Samsung's web sites. If is delete the offending "?" in device manager win98 will "see" new hardware and ask me to find a driver for it. Any suggestions?

You need the driver for the controller, not the hard drives. You should be going to your motherboard manufacturer's webpage.

John is correct, pci mass storage is for ata 66 or 100 hard drives and the maker of your motherboard supplies the drivers for that. I have a Soyo motherboard and have the same pci mass storage controllers in my device manager even though I don't use them. I just disabled them in control panel. If you remove then they will just keep being detected everytime you delete them and re-boot.
