Comment:

Having reinstalled (after reformatting)
98se, I am unable to connect to my router.
On startup, I get <New Hardware
Detected - Unknown Device>, then <New
Hardware Detected - PCI Ethernet
Controller> When I hit cancel, having
gone through every disk I have looking for
drivers, the connection light on the router
goes out.

I must admit in advance that I know very
little about PCs, but inside the box, all PCI
slots are empty, there are 2 hard drives,
the usual ports, and an RJ45 slot, which I
have been using to connect (without any
previous problems). The RJ45 port isn't
listed on the Onboard Peripherals list - is
this relevant?

I tried installing an NIC card, with relevant
drivers, but found myself looking for 4
new bits of hardware when I did that.

Been tearing out what is left of my hair
over this for the past week - any ideas?

Here is the self extracting driver file for your computer running Win98. Download and copy to a floppy disk then run on your computer.

When you get to the Hardware found do not cancel go through it and when it asks you where (Floppy A:\, CD-ROM Drive, Microsoft Updates, Specify Location) Click off all and pick only "Specify Location." In the Location Box delete "A:\" and type "C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS" without the quote marks and press Enter. That usually works for me.

Excellent, guys! Worked a treat. I knew all
I needed to do was find someone who
knew more about PCs than I do (not
generally that difficult).

One final question - I have an old HP
p1130 monitor that used to display better
than the "pixel the size of golf ball"
resolution I have now, without a video
card. I tried downloading the drivers from
HP for that monitor, but they didn't work.
Any ideas on this? (this isn't nearly as
important, but getting a quarter of a typical
page on a 21" monitor does mean I can
take my glasses off....).

Thanks again for the help on the really
important issue

Doug

You need to install the video drivers for you Intel 815 integrated graphics. Below is the self extracting file. This file is almost 8MB. Download directly to your desktop and doubleclick it.

It ran like a treat... didn't even need to
restart.

Better explain - I'm a Mac man - got a 4
port router, with 3 Macs attached to it, and
one PC for dimeadozen.org and chat. I
really have no idea what I am doing with a
PC, so the help I received meant more
than I can express... thanks, guys
