thanks

HI
Oh a compaq - Do you install from a quick restore disk, is there an option to fix damage files etc (I haven't worked on a compaq for a while) (I read in this forum where there is a small partition in compaqs, that has all the drivers and or diagnostics on it)

Hi Bill, anenefan, hello everyone,
You may want to try the Compaq ActiveUpdate
. I have not personally used it but it shouldn't hurt.Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi again
Firstly you have no cd used for installing the operating system on your computer. It will only be a matter of time before you will need one - sorry.
OK compaqs. I have no idea how resent or old yours is. So this may be how your compaq is:
Ordinarilly you hard drive at the very least will have a small section at the begining of the drive and then 1 big block of "space" used to record where windows is and any programs it runs is stored there as well. In compaqs, this big block is devided so there is a small bit that is hidden and a large section for windows.
In this small diagnostic section there are utilities that you can access at boot up (F8 I think you press - I don't know - its been years since I've touched one, so someone correct me here or if they can offer a lot more depth).

Hi Bill, anenefan, hello everyone,
There should be two labels on the computer, one on the right side towards the front and another on the back above the expansion slots.
Best Regards,
Mesich

The only thing on the front is intell sticker with penteium on it. and nothing on the back this is i real pain .

bill's Modem Problem Message 3
Unless help-seekers, especially those who have posted in Forums before, start posting the information about their Computer along with the clear desciption of the encountered problem, answers will remain general, nonspecific, unhelpful and often confusing! Starting a new thread every time one feels frustrated and helpless, adds to the confusion because of conflicting responses! What is the best way to avoid frustartion in a Forum?
1. Post a clear desciption of the problem along with any displayed Error message verbatim including any when Details is clicked in case of "Fatal Errors"
2. Never Forget to give Computer Specifications such as the Operating System name & Version , Browser Name & Version, Makes & Models of Motherboard, CPU, Videocard, Sound Card, Modem, NIC if it is a Cloned PC or the EXACT Make and Model of the PC in case of Brand Name PC in the very FIRST Message either at the beginning or end of the Post. If the question involves any specific device such as Modem, Video Card, Printer or Sacnner referring to them, for example, merely as "my printer" etc instead of by their make and model begets an equally useless response!
3. Post all Follow-up responses to the same thread until the problem is resolved.
4. Stick to the facts! Avoid wasting words to express anger and frustration.
5. Read other posts to see what is good and bad in them and modify your future posts to be more helpful and enjoy the Forum:-)

In your post above you say there is nothing plugged into the motherboard but there is a telephone jack. I don't think you have a modem but are looking at the Integrated Network adapter.

do you have led's or lights next to the "Phone" plug hole? If so it is not a modem. Ethernet (network card) plug holes are the same shape, but a bit wider(8 metal pins in plug hole) and led's beside it.

OK I WILL STAY HERE.HERE IS THE STORY.
IFORMATED AND REINSTALLEDWIN98. Before i done this i had no prpblem to install my high speed internet soft ware and go on the net.i never changed any cards in the pc . but when i try to connect it says cannot connect .when i use to connect befor in ndevices under network adapters there wasrealtek rtl8029enternet adaptor and compatibles . my isp suppot says i need to have that to connect this make any sense to anyone

no there is no light it says it says for telephone net work and is made into the mother board

I went there and found the drive selected win 98 and then go i saved it to floppy a because i need to install on another pc. all i get is read me material. i guess i am not doing it right again sorry for being such a bother.

Bill,
What you are downloading is Win98-8029(508).zip
It is a compressed Realtek 8029 Ethernet Adapter driver file for Win98 (Version 5.08.)
You need an unzipping Progranm like WinZip 8.1 SR-1 Evaluation Version a Shareware or Power Archiver 2003, a Freeware to decompress or open the file .
Save the zipped files to a newely created Folder on desktop [Example : C:\Windows\Desktop\Realtek]or some other Folder of your choice.
Using the Unzipping tool [Winzip or Power Archiver], Unzip and then Click the Extract button of the tool and Extract all the files to the same Folder [Example C:\Windows\Desktop\Realtek]
Open Device Manger [Right -click My Computer>Properties>Device Manager]Double- click the PCI Communication Device or Network adapter with the ! (Exclammation Point)
Click Update Driver button under Driver tab, and using the Driver Installation Wizard direct the search to the folder you have unzipped and Extracted the downloaded driver.
You might need Win98 CD when prompted to complete the Driver install.

i have unzip it and when i click on it to extract i get this message THISIS AN ENVALED SECURY CATLOG FILE.

As long as you communicate clearly in the same thread, there are a lot of people willing and ready to help:-)
The more details you give about your computer and the more descriptive you are about the nature of the problem you are having, the faster and more comprehensive you get your answers to solve them:-)
Good luck. I am sure the problem is solvable!

"THIS IS AN INVALID SECURY CATALOG FILE"
Are you talking here about your try to install Winzip, or to install your new ethernet card driver?

here is what i got now in device managerunder mouse ! point ps/2compatiable mouse port ? other devices
?pci internet controllerI THINK IT IS TIME FOR THE FINAL POST THAT IS THE ONE IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE WRAP THE PC AROUND IT . I AM GETTING NO WHERE .

Most probably your browser is configured to prevent Active-X scripts, from being used, and that is why that warning /error message because the site will not function properly during download.
To re-configure your Internet Explorer browser security settings, please do the following:
1.Open Internet Explorer
2.Click Tools>internet Options…> Security Tab.
3.Change the Security Level for the Internet Zone to Medium or Low for this download.
4.Click OK.
NOTE!
After the present download make sure to reconfigure your Security back to the original

Regarding the Device Manager entries:
1. If your Mouse is currently working alright you can deal with its error later. But, you must give Details of the mouse used now and any mouse previously Installed and Removed from this PC.
2. The ? Other devices> PCI Internet Controller is the non functioning REALTEK Ethernet Adapter. Once you download and install the driver that error message will go away.
Just hang in there a bit longer! You are very close to the solution:-)Don't quit when you are very near the FINISH LINE of this Marathon:-)

Ok i am formating my pc now again andstart over i will follow your last instructions this may take awhile thanks again

Hi Bill!
Please don't start a new thread with your Reformat! Just restate the Computer details and a summary of events upto that point for readers to catch up:-)
Good luck in your Marathon Troubleshoot:-)

no i am installing on another pc that is not on the net .that is what i am tryimg to do .i did get the drivers extracted to a folder and followed the instructions earlier posted.called up the folder in the specify areaand here is the message windows was unable to fine the drivers for this device. dont tell me that i am trying to install the wrong driver and that pci internet device i am teying to install is wrong how do i know what the device is?

Well, I read your earlier post in the same thread:- "Ok i am formating my pc now again andstart over", and assumed it to mean the same Computer as the one we were troubleshooting:-)
I am sorry for the misinterpretation! It is possible you have downloaded or they have kept for download a file that is not for your PCI ETHERNET CONTROLLER [ NOT "INTERNET" CONTROLLER as wrongly posted by me too by copying your post:-)]
Why did you fail with the latest download?
1.It is possible that Windows98 is unable to select the .INF file from the list of Unzipped files in that folder to start Installation. If that is the case, you must the New Harware Wizard direct to the .INF File, not just Folder containing the unzipped files.
If that too is unsuccessful, apparently the downloaded file is not the right one. You can try Driverguide.com for the
Realtek8029 Network Adapter Driver
In the above site, you will have to try the following Login name and Password to download the driver.
Login name = drivers
Password = all
You may also have to type in a 3 or 4 letter or number verification code in a box as shown there to access the drive download page. How will you be sure that the PCI device you are downloading the Driver, is the Realtek Ethernet card?
That is the question we cannot answer for sure. From the series of posts you have made, a lot of readers were guessing and making some detective work! By a process of elimination, some of us concluded you have an Ethernet card in your PC and NO Dialup Modem! Here are the reasons:-
You mentioned about a Device with a telephone socket like Jack on the back panel of your PC. Since there was only one socket we guessed it was an RJ45 and NOT RJ11 jack of Dialup Internal Modem. The above guess was strengthened with the piece of information that there was no Interface PCI/ISA/NCR card corresponding to the jack and that it was that of a device integrated with the Motherboard.
Your another post for the previously present Realtek RTL 8029 PCI Ethernet Controller in the DEVICE MANAGER, made us think that the RJ45 jack was its part. Your statement that you have a fast Internet service made us think you have a broadband connection via Ethernet Controller possibly thrugh a cable or DSL modem although you have NEVER mentioned as such. :-)
So you can understand how we are following your troubleshoot.
I know someone else had already advised you to Install the program AIDA32 and BELARC Advisor to querry your MoB to see whether it could find the hardware specs. Your subsequent posts made no mention of it and hence we didn't know whether you tried to identify all the devices that way and failed or never even tried!

no i never tried adia 32 and belarc but i will give it a try and i am using high speed internet or to say that was what i was using before i ran into this prob.

i downloaded a few rtl8029 from drive guid but no luck on one of them i tried the lan adapter set up and diagonsics. it said there is no land board found on your system i guess that is what i am trying to fine and install . i tried to download adia 32 but it was to big for a drive for me to tranfer to other pc.

i can get into dxdiag will that tell me what my pci internet adapter is . when i go to device s and click on net work adapter with the ? mark it tells me that it is install but has a problem i view the problem and it tells me there are no drives installed for that device. i hope this will help you to help me .

Hi again
I don't know if you have any serial connection on your compaq. Would it be possible to borrow an external modem from some one (with their driver disk) Install the modem download what you need to get your system up and running and then return the modem?

Bill,
I can understand your frustration after several days of hours of continuous troubleshoot finding no solution for the problem:-(
I have serious doubts whether the information you have posted about your Integrated LAN (NIC) device or Ethernet Controller [all of them referer to the same 'gizmo'] is correct. I am just wondering that the correct model number for your Realtek Ethernet Controller might NOT be 8029! My extensive search with all available Models of Compaq Deskpro 4000 did not show Realtek 8029 Ethernet Controller but many models matched to RTL8139!
Why don't you try to download
RTL8139(A/B/C/D/8130)/810X series and see?DXDIAG is of no help in identifying what we are interested in:-(
AIDA32 & Belarc Advisor can be downloaded to your Internet connected machine and then either carried to this via CD-R/CD-RW Discs if you have a CD-RW drive in that machine or using multiple floppies with the aid of File splitters. [ Example: JR Split File 2.1]
Hope this helps:-)
Good luck.
Will follow your problem closely:-)

I guess you are asking about what Version of the RTL8139 Driver I suggest you download!
If that is the case, my suggestion is this:
Auto installation program(support Win981st/Win98SE/WinME/Win2K/WinXP ver.606, Realtek and OEM ID) 1.10 2003/10/09 2152k

thanks all
I am going to word with all the info you game me i downloaded adia and file splitter . i may need some help here so i will repost on that . thanks again i will return to this post if i solve the prob with pci
thanks again
