This is the 2nd post I'm entering today for the same problem (re:13:48 - "restore CONFIG.SYS"). The reply I got was vague for my limited knowledge of DOS. I tried 'Safe Mode' but I just ended up on the DOS screen. I've used Safe Mode before and it always got me into Windows gui, but this time - just DOS! I can access the 'Config.sys' file and see what's in it, but I don't know what should or should not be there.
First of all I'll mention the error message that comes up when I turn on the PC.
"The following file is missing or corrupted, 'C:\DEV\FDATACD.SYS' - There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 1."
When this first happened this morning I put in a startup disk, which I never used before, and I thought that using it would just open Windows but it just left me with DOS, which I haven't a clue to use. I have a feeling that by using the disk I messed things up more??.
Does anyone know what I can do? Please be very specific with each step, thanks. The OS was WIN98se using FAT32. James

James,

Delete everything in the config.sys and reboot.
However, after doing so do not make a new post simply post back here so others can follow.

You say you can access the config.sys

Delete everything in there.
Save and Exit.

Post Back.

How many responses have asked him what is in Config.sys...
But we still don't know. It would be easy to solve his problem if only he would tell us what is actually in line 1.

James: You have given us a lot of information and you have got us on the edge of our seats. Please, I beg you, tell us:

What is in line 1?

Sorry - I don't know how to use this forum! I can't figure out how any one would know if I added more in the original or not.
Anyway, I've tried the changes mentioned and they don't work. There is one change: I added the line at the top -
"DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS"
But now it's telling me the same error message that line 2 (now 2 instead of 1 because of adding the line at the top) has errors. This is now the entire Config.sys file:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DEV\FDATACD.SYS /D:MSCDOHP
REM DEVICE=C:\DEV\FDATACD.SYS /D:MSCDOHP
It also says that a file is missing or corrupted, which is:
C:\DEV\FDATACD.SYS
I hope that I am using this forum correctly now. Thankyou

Hey James,

Boot into DOS with your bootup disk. When your at command prompt, type:

edit c:\config.sys

Now delete ALL of the lines that have any reference to FDATACD.SYS. You do not need the REM either (basically delete EVERYTHING in config.sys except the first line: DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS. When you exit EDIT, make sure you save the changes. After you exit EDIT and are back at command prompt restart your computer. It should work now.
