I'm looking for suggestions. I have one computer which is running Win98, but has quite a small amount of RAM and an older cpu. I have been told before that it is on it's last legs, and I believe that. Yesterday it rebooted itself several times on it's own, and finally it did not start back up. Today when I turn it on it does not boot at all, the fan is on but I can't hear the hard drive spinning or over usual sounds at all. The monitor remains black.
I would have just thought that it had died a natural death except for this latest worm that causes crashes. If I could get the thing on I could run a virus fix, but I can't even turn it on. It doesn't recognize a boot disk when I put one in.
Any suggestions for getting it booted so I could figure out what the problem might be?
Thanks, gpt

Does it go through the POST routine? Does anything from the BIOS show up at power-on? If not, I'd suspect the following:
1. Power supply (since the drive isn't spinning).
2. Memory chip failure
3. Motherboard
4. CPUNow that's a lot to have to deal with. I don't envy you.

I agree that the power supply is the most likely culprit if the hard drive isn't spinning. Power supplies are relatively easy to swap from one system to another. It just requires disconnecting all the cables and removing a few screws holding it in the case.

I highly doubt it is the blaster viruse because it only effects Windows 2k and windows XP machines. So i would guess the Hard Drive or Power Supplie. the cpu is liess likey but not um common, or the memory is a less likely cause

Thanks, it looks like no fun. Gives me an excuse to bug the boss for a new one anyway.
I appreciate all your help!

I have win 2000 on my PC and I am having the exact same issue. My PC was working just fine and one day, it just stopped booting at all. The hard disk and power lights are on but I can't hear the hard disk spinning. There are no boot messages showing up on the monitor. Absolutely nothing is happenning. I highly doubt that it is a virus or software problem. Could my hard drive have crashed. Then why aren't the bios messages showing up?
