Something in the normal start menu is causing the problem. Clean up yur start menu from safe mode.

There can be many reasons (including that given in #1).

Right click My Computer and go to Properties/Device Manager. Make sure there are no errors showing (yellow question marks etc).

Worth updating your AV and running it (there's a virus that does this).

Could also be a hardware problem (CPU-RAM-Motherboard-PS). Try one RAM stick at a time in first postion. Clean edge connectors with a pencil eraser while you are there - do same with video card if it's an add-on.

Win XP reboots when it encounters an unrecoverable error.

To have XP display the error message instead of rebooting:

1. Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
4. Under System failure, click to clear the Automatically restart check box.
5. Click OK, and then click OK.

OOps ignore the previous post. I thought I was in the XP forum.
It's most likely a driver problem, follow the advice in reponses 1 and 2.

apended to all the above:

safe mode most commonly goes around serious graphics device driver problems. look in device manager for errors. update driver and check functionality with different graphics card.
