Power supply went bad so i replaced it. i also have a brand new hd i put in (20 gig) now the machine posts but won't boot to anything no floppy no cd-rom nothing. then the screen starts to flash. i thought video problem, but i installed a known good video card and no change. can anyone help me.

No no os on new h.d. but it won't boot to a win 98 start up floppy. or my win xp cd.
no error messages just jumbled letters and a pinball looking screen. also the screen jumps around strangely.

No os on the new h.d. yet i was going to install from my win xp cd, but it won't boot to it or a win 98 boot floppy. also i don't get any errors just a screen that jumps around and some jumbled letters. sometimes some lines that resemble a pinball game.

No os on new drive, and no error message i just see jumbled letters and sometimes it makes a screen that resembles a pinball game.

OK, we heard you the 1st time!
Make sure your jumpers are setup properly. Check that the IDE/floppy cables are fully seated & not plugged in upside down.

Check that the HD is properly identifed in cmos--usually as AUTO--and that it's connected and jumpered properly. Make sure the floppy drive is the first boot device in cmos.
You may need to disconnect the drive to see if it's the drive or something else that's causing the problem. You may have nudged something loose while inside the case. It should boot with a bootdisk with the HD disconnected if that's the problem.

Sorry about all the posts im at work shareing a computer when i didn't see my message there i kept posting. im new to this site anyway. i unplugged the floppy and set the cd rom as first boot still nothing happens. h.d. is jumpered as it was factory, my floppy cables have a notch that only allows me to plug them in one way. i checked all connections twice. everything is seated. im at a loss. and again sorry about the extra posts.

Also forgot to mention the floppy light comes on and stays on with or without a disk in it. is this normal. im also wondering could i have a bad mainboard?

The floppy light staying on is an indication that the data cable is on backwards. The twisted end of the cable should be at the drive, and if the connector and the drive are "keyed" to prevent the cable from being connected properly, check the other end of the cable at the motherboard. At the motherboard, ensure the red or blue stripe on the cables edge is at pin 1 of the connector. Pin 1 is indicated on the motherboard next to the connector. Ensure the same at the floppy.
On "most" floppy drives, the red stripe is farthest away from the drives power cable. It's the opposite with hard drives and cdroms. The red stripe is usually closest to the power connector.

as for the floppy drive light staying on- is that with or with out the data cable connected.
I sugguest resetting the video card, if not onboard and the cabe going to monitor.

The video is onboard so no luck there, but i did try a known good video card and no luck. i will however try the floppy cable thing, the ide cable im useing is from an older machine and does have a twist at the end but there are four plugins on the cable instead of just two. should i try a different cable. two of the other plugs are for the old style floppy 5 1/4. would that be a problem?

if the video jumps around it would not be due to the floppy cable. If you have the system pluged into a power strip or extention cord, remove it. try a different house outlet.

No it shouldn't be a problem. Make sure the red-striped edge of the ribbon cable is connected to the #1 pin side of both the drive and motherboard connector.
