I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on this problem. Every time I turn my PC off, when it is turned back on again the time still shows the same as when it was switched off, often the previous night. I did a search of the board and most signs seem to point to a battery problem?

What I'm most concerned about is - is this problem with the clock likely to be just the first of many? Is the entire motherboard on the way out, or will I just have a useless PC clock? I can live clockless, but the PC is being passed on to my mother next month and she will be after my blood if it melts down within weeks...

Simple matter of replacing the motherboard (Bios) battery. It only cost a couple of bucks.

I agree with you that this might be the first of many, but to check it out I would replace the battery. Your only talking a couple of bucks, fairly cheap to troubleshot that problem. I've heard the battery causing you to lose time but not keep the old time for the next time you reboot. But like I stated earlier, it is rather inexpensive try.

Ditto

Definitely the battery.

And as a technician by trade I've encountered many sytems that hold the time they were last switched off.

So no worries - just replace the battery on the motherboard - the small round silver one - About the size of a 10p coin if you're in England !

lol

Regards

Simon

And if you're not in England, it's still the size of 10p.
