Comment: What could be the cause of a pc beeping for a while at the windows splash screen and then freezing there? A problem with autoexec.bat? Anyone give me any pointers as to what I should be looking for? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)Sorry shoulda been clearer, the system passes the POST. The beeps occur at the windows splash screen. Way to late to be a POST problem.

Reply: (edit)Press the F8 key when you start your computer(I think its that key) to come to the Windows boot menu, and: A) Boot in Safe Mode. Or: B) Use a Boot Disk, and view the contents of the c:\autoexec.bat file. An incorrect entry can cause problems. Or: C) Create a new Bootlog.txt file and view it to see what is failing. The only problems I've ever had with autoexec.bat stopping the startup sequence is when a program such as a virus scanner is loaded and doesn't exit correctly and ends up halting the rest of the booting sequence.
