The PC used to have a Macafee Security program which was partially blown away. On booting up, there is a pause alerting that we should reinstall program, then completely uninstall. I don't have the disc, I don't even know which Macafee version it was. A search for Macafee files in the registry turns up nothing. How do I simply bypass the command CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE

""A search for Macafee files in the registry turns up nothing"
Hopefully you spelled it correctly when you did your search...it's not "Macafee". lol
How did you go about removing it from your system? If you simply deleted the folder rather than running the uninstaller, there are probably remnants all over the place...that's why you're being recommended to reinstall then uninstall.
Did you bother to check the McAfee website? They offer a free "McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)".
Here's the direct download:
http://download.mcafee.com/products...

Look in the registry for 'mcafee' instead of 'macafee'. Also look for 'Network Associates'
Additionally, post the entire message that is presented during the noted pause.
Bryan

... also look in the file "autoexec.bat"
and post the contents.Grrrr
wat do I know?
... got brain freeze

You will most likely find the offending entry in system.ini or possibly but less likely, win.ini.

It might be easiest to run hijackthis and delete all the Mcafee references. The newest version, 2.00.0, isn't compatible with 98. This one, version 1.99.1, is compatible:

OK, thanks for the suggestions. One, I did spell McAfee correctly in my SEARCH. Two, I used a program called REGISTRY CLEANER to remove all traces from the registry. Next, I must confess I don't remember how or even why I tried to remove the program.
Thanks for your responses, I'll give them all a shot. I just discoverd this website and it looks like it'll be a big help from time to time.
One more thing. Does anyone bother with rookit removal? Is it mainly for businesses?

Anyone can get infected with a Rootkit. They are a particularly nasty form of spy-ware that hide themselves deep within the Operating system.
AVG do a free rootkit removal tool.

Hi Jerseyjak, jam, Bryan, mavis007, StuartS, DAVEINCAPS, hi everyone
"...On booting up, there is a pause alerting ..."
This could indicate the message appears while the system is processing Config.sys and Autoexec.bat.
Like mavis007 I would like you to have look in your Autoexec.bat file, look for a line reading something very similar to:C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\NETWOR~1\VIRUSS~1\40~1.XX\scan.exe C:\
(the above should be read as one line)If you find this line or a very similar looking one, there are two options;
a) Remark the line by adding rem including a space in front of the line, or
b) Remove/delete the entire line from your Autoexec.bat.HTH
