Does anyone know of any cheaper alternatives to partition magic. i want to create a new partition on my hard drivew without losing any data. Thanks in advance

Sure thing -- free utility FIPS, if it's FAT or FAT32 formatted partition you want to split. Don't forget to defragment your drive before using FIPS.
