I am trying to complete building a Pentium MMX 200Mhz computer running Win 98. The origional CD-Rom died so I pulled out a Panasonic CD-Rom out of a Osbourne 486 computer where the CD-Rom was working. The Problem is when I put the Panasonic CD-Rom in the Pentium computer, the computer will not boot. I have tried reversing the ribbon and the computer boots to the memery test area, but no further.I pulled a Sony CD-Rom out of my personal computer and put it in the pentium and it works fine.I then put the Panasonic CD-Rom in my personal computer and have the same problem as before, the computer will not boot.I put the Panaxonic CD-Rom back in the 486 computer and it works fine.
I am at a total loss why it works in 1 computer and not in another. I do have the Drivers for the CD-Rom

How old is this CD? Is it really IDE? Or some proprietary model.

The CD-rom has Manufactured August 1993 sticker on it.The CD-Rom came out of a 486 DX 2 66Mhz computer It works ok with this computer ,but as soon as I put it in 3 different Pentium Computers the Pentiums will not boot.I had to get special drivers for the CD-Rom for the 486 computer to work. I did install these drivers in one Pentium computer and still no joy

If you have it sharing a cable, you DO have it jumpered as a slave, don't you?

There are 8 pins where the jumpers are instead of the normal 6. I have tried the jumpers on all the pins still no joy

The old Panasonic X2/X4 (aka Matsus---a) drives utilized a proprietary interface. These were popular in Packard-Bells.
New IDE drives are relatively cheap. Suggest you dump the Panasonic in the trash.
Good luck.

I almost suggested tossing the thing. I recently got two 50x drives with the dos install discs for less than 40.00US apiece. I'm sure you could do better, this was in our local small town, not known for good pricing.
