I have a weird problem. When I log into my computer I get an error saying, Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module SHDOCVM.dll. I have found this file on the Net and replaced it. Now it comes up saying that Explorer has caused a page fault in SHDOC401.DLL. I tried to replace it and it still shows the same error.
I have looked online to see if there are any solutions to this issue. So far people say to reinstall IE. I did that and it worked if I logged in as myself or Administrator. But as soon as someone else logged in the error occurred and then any one else (Myself or Administrator) who logged in would get the error as well.
I've read to check for long files names in the registry. The longest one is 10 characters and it is .liveupdate. I didn't delete it because I thought that it was for Norton.
Next, I've read to run scanreg /fix. I did that, it came back and said that it has successfully fixed the registry. I rebooted and still I'm getting the page fault in SHDOC401.DLL.
I thought that maybe it had something to do with this user's profile. Profiles are turned off on this machine, so I deleted her username in C:\Windows\Profiles, logged in again and still, the same error.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this error?
slider. "I've read to check for long files names in the registry. The longest one is 10 characters and it is .liveupdate. I didn't delete it because I thought that it was for Norton"
I think they mean file extensions in the registry not file names. Go to the link below and scroll all the way down to near the bottom and read the "From: Jim on 06/20/2002" solution.
Do you really mean SHDOCVM.dll or did you mean SHDOCVW.dll? I'll assume the latter.
Both shdocvw.dll & shdoc401.dll get updated. I would take care wandering around the net grabbing files unless you have some idea which versions you are seeking. Also note that some are for other operating systems. You can add more problems if you get file versions wrong.
If you have W98SE with IE6 SP1 and all the latest updates I would suggest that the following versions would be right for you:
shdocvw.dll Version 6.00.2800.1849 (xpsp2.060519-1300). This version is for W98SE despite its appearance. It is also used on XP.
One other point is that Win98se has no administrator rights capabilities as such. If you are logging in using the name "administrator" this is just another user name.
Sorry if I have confused everyone. I didn't read over my post before submitting. I ment SHDOCVW.DLL and I ment Extentions, not long files names.
The version of SHDOCVW.DLL is 5.0.2717.2000. I am currently reinstalling IE6 again. Hopefully after doing so at least I will be able to log in and I thought I would go to windowsupdate and see if there is anything there that might help.
I've looked around to see if I can find version 6.00.2800.1849 of SHDOCVW.DLL, but I have not been able to locate it. I have found a few older and newer versions, but not the one you have mentioned Derek.
Thanks again for everyone's help! I will let you know how the reinstall goes.
Ok, so I reinstalled IE6 SP1 again. After the install everything worked fine. I was logged in, I could use the computer with no problem. I restarted the computer and logged in again. Still, everything worked! I messed around a while, and tried to go to windowdupate.com, but I kept getting an error after it found updates. IT said object not found. Well, I just decided to see what happens when I log in as the user that was creating these problems... And guess what? I log in as her, and BAM! There's that error again, this time it tells me Explorer has caused a stack fault in SHDOCVW.DLL.
Thank you everyone for all your help. The last error was fixed by changing the path to My Documents. It was set to a share folder on a sever, and as soon as I changed it to c:\My Documents, this user was able to log in without Explorer crashing.
(A lot of work for such a simple task!)
I just wanted to post this in case any one runs into the same problem and have tried everything else. Maybe this will help!
Just for info, don't be tempted to use a newer version of SHDOCVW.DLL than I suggested because it will most certainly be intended for XP.
If by any chance you still need 6.00.2800.1849 I can send it, although if you can somehow get Windows update to work that would be a neater option. I have found W9x Update website a bit rickety recently so maybe it will work if you try again on some other day.
