Comment:
I have a 98 SE Dell Latitude CPi d300xt laptop with 300 mhZ and 64 mb RAM. My laptop's fan never runs, and I am very worried about it overheating. I am currently only using it in short sessions to make sure it doesn't even get warm. I am sick of doing this, so could somebody tell me whats wrong? The computer runs perfectly and gives me no errors related to this.

As long as you don't do anything that takes a lot of CPU power it shouldn't be a problem.
If you turn the computer on and run on windows and Microsft Word, or something like that. It won't get too hot.
But if you start running a lot of programs (or any 3D games). The CPU will got real hot real fast, and then you will have a problem.
As long as you don't do anything that puts strain on your computer it won't over heat. (Note for any laptop over 1ghz this is NOT true).

Hi Andrew, Nachos, David, hi everyone,
Laptop are designed so the cooling fan doesn't run until a set temperature is reached. This is to conserve power for the battery. The temperature setpoint is normally adjustable within the bios settings. Drop the lower limit setting for the temperature and see if the fan turns on.
I had a Dell Latitude 850Mhz and the cooling fan rarely ran.
Best Regards, Mesich

I am running Phoenix BIOS revision AO5 from Dell. I went into BIOS setup and there is nothing about a temperature for the fan at all. If I run word or something like it, it doesn't get hot like the guy said, but how do I make the fan come on? Do I have a bad fan?
