Trying to help a friend that is on basic AT&T worlnet service so she gets no free tech help from AT&T. She is using windows 98, outlook express 6 and IE 6. This is one single home computer accessing the net with dialup. When she is in IE and clicks to get her mail this error pops up from outlook express.
The connection to the server has failed account postoffice.worldnet.att.net server mailhost.worldnet.att.net protocol SMTP port 25 secure (SSL): no socket error 10065, error number 0x800CCC0E.
She has had this same set up for at least two years and nothing has been changed, she said this started about a month ago.
I googled socket error 10065 and what I found was it means no route to host but I am an AOL user so I have no clue about outlook express or IE so can someone explain to me what's going on and how I can help her fix it? We can close the error and her mailbox was there but only old mail she saved nothing new it seemed. I think she is not getting her mail or rather it's not downloading and when we tried to send mail we got that error also so I don't think it's sending. Went to the AT&T website to try and access her mail through the net and see what I could find out and when we click e-mail the page to log in won't display so I couldn't try that. All other webpages display with no problem but when she wants to buy something and gets to the last part of the check out, when she clicks continue she gets this page cannot be displayed and can't order anything. Only when on the last part of ordering from a website and not just one site it's every site she tried to buy from so would this be connected to the socket error?

Try going to IE Tools,Internet Options, Advanced, Under the Security section place a check next to USE SSL 2.0 and USE SSL 3.0.
If the checks are already there then remove them and then replace them. Click Apply and Ok.Also double check the E-Mail server settings within OE to make sure they are correct for the incoming and outgoing mail servers.
The Worldnet website should have the correct settings if you do not know them.HTH

Ok I am not at her computer right now so I will call and have her check those settings. I can get to the e-mail log in page from my computer but she forgot where she wrote her password down so she is going to have to find that to check from the web. What I did find by going to worldnet help was some useeful information to verify her account in outlook express. All e-mail server settings are correct according to the diagarams I am following on the AT&T help site except when I go to the last one where we check the connection properties. AT&T says there should be a check mark in always connecto to this account using AT&T connection service. Trouble is it says Alta Vista now and when she clicks the drop down arrorw there is no choice for AT&T so I am guessing this is the problem but I have no clue what to do from here?

I just figured out that she cannot get free phone in support but there is a spot to e-mail them with problems or chat with a live agent so tonight I will go over and we will contact them through live chat and see what they say.

Tell her to try UNchecking the "Always connect to...". The error msg shows there's no route to the mailserver VIA the "Altavista" or whatever connection. Assuming she IS actually dialled up to AT&T it should then work OK.

Ok, I am going to try and get their later and we will try that. We are connected to AT&T when trying to get her mail and do all this. That is the only ISP she has had or used for years now since she got the computer. Maybe when the problem first started she tried to fix it herself and messed with something, will have to ask.
