I used to be able to get incoming mail on my old computer using Outlook Express 5. I can send email using it, but when I go to retrieve messages, it says there are no new messages. I know there are messages there; I forwarded some to myself as a test. On my newer computer with Outlook 2002 I can get the mail with no problem. I checked all the settings in Outlook Express 5 and it checks out OK. Any ideas on why I can send mail with Outlook Express 5 but not retrieve incoming messages? Thanks.

a lot of isp have changed the port settings and require authentication for sending mail.
check your isp web site for updated mail settings

Folks,
Thanks for responding. I have done all you suggested already. It remains a mystery why I can send but not receive.

Hi CyberDude, Bryan, mountain, Win98User, hi everyone
There are one or two possible reasons and solutions to this issue. Maybe even three.
In Outlook Express, under the Internet Account properties at the Advanced tab the checkbox for Leave a copy of messages on server is checked.
Uncheck the checkbox and see if you are able to receive email within Outlook Express.
Note: You will not receive those email messages afterwards in Outlook 2000 at this point, you need to first collect them with Outlook 2000.In Outlook Express the Internet Account may have somehow gotten corrupted, my son and I bumped in to this yesterday on two machines of a client of him. The client wasn't able to retrieve email for a week through OE but could confirm he had email by checking his web mail. He could send out but not receive any email.
In Outlook 2000 under Tools => E-mail Accounts => View or change existing e-mail account => Next => select account => Change => More Settings => on the Advanced tab there might be a clear/empty checkbox for Leave a copy of messages on the server.
Check that checkbox, send yourself a email and see if you are able to receive it in OE.If the checkbox is checked in Outlook 2000, than go to your machine running OE and export the Internet Account settings for save keeping.
When the export is completed, Remove the Internet account.
Now Add a new Internet Account, follow the Wizard and type in the required information such as Display name, email address, incoming and outgoing mail server etc. I think you know the drill. :-)Once you are done with the Wizard in OE, click on Properties for the newly created Internet Account go to the Advanced tab and place checkmark to Leave a copy of the messages on the server. Also place a checkmark in front of Remove from server after x days and select a for you convenient amount of day's. Doing such will give you some time to also Download your emails in to Outlook 2000.
Now hopefully you are able to receive your email messages with OE again as well.

To the Count and all who have been so kind to respond: I fixed the problem. I had the wrong name listed as the incoming mail server. Apparently, my ISP changed the server name a while back and I updated it only on my newer PC. The older PC was never updated. When I changed the server name to what it's supposed to be, I was able to get the mail. Thanks to all who responded.

Again Bryan has been right from the beginning. :-)
Thanks for posting back the outcome, it's very much appreciated!
