Still trying to get Outlook Express 5 to check my Hotmail account as promised.

As suggested by people here I have dumped and remade the account and also un and re installed IE5.

I still get the message:

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Bad Request', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 65535, Error Number: 0x800CCC31

Don't use "New Account Signup", rather use Tools/Accounts/add/mail. Choose "I already have an Email account, put in your name.(next) Enter your Email address for Hot Mail.(next) This page should show Http and hotmail, so just hit (next) hit (Finish). It will start to download the folders from Hotmail. That's about it. That "New Account Signup" business is confusing, as you can do either from Tools/Accounts, and probably should never have been put on the Tools drop down menu.

I think this has something to do with your ISP Server; I had the same problem and used my dialup from work with another ISP and the folders downloaded perfectly! When I switched back, I still had the problem.

The URL given by Kamal points to an apparently similar error “0x800CCC37" rather than “0x800CCC31". “Microsoft has confirmed this (0x800CCC37) to be a problem in the Microsoft products [Outlook Express version 5]” and offer the following fix:

“To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
1. Disable Access Control for Web Proxy.
2. Configure Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to not use a Proxy server. Instead, use the Winsock Proxy client.”

Perhaps the fix for 0x800CCC37 will also fix 0x800CCC31 – I would like to give it a go – but unfortunately these instructions are too cryptic for a mere mortal like me. I have let MS know and hopefully they will expand the instructions in their article. In the meantime, can anyone give step by step instruction on how to implement each of these alternatives – or directions on where to find such instructions?

Tks in anticipation!

The same problem with me. It worked fine but stopped working unexpectedly. I can not remember if it happened before or after I upgraded to IE v5.00.2912.6307 (56 bit encryption) from IE v5.00.2314.1003 (40 bit encryption).

The second computer connected to the same network still has IE v5.00.2314.1103 (40 bit encryption) and it can always access
the Hotmail folders from Outlook Express with no problem!

What is the real cause of this strange phenomenon? Do you have a WORKING solution?

Any help will be appreciated! Please e-mail directly to kgb@tande.com

OE5, when used with Hotmail uses both httpmail and nntp protocols

Many proxy servers used with PCs for home networks don't support the httpmail protocol. Some do.

Now people with multiple PCs on a network may work because they either are using NAT-based
software to share access to the internet,
or because they're using the machine that's
the connection to the internet (bypasses the proxy server software)

I've been thru all these problems with a variety of proxy server demos. The frustrating thing is that most proxy server software doesn't advertise (yet) whether it supports httpmail. Only a few proxy servers do.

I'm currently using Fire Door, although if you don't want the hassles of proxy server configuration setup, a NAT-based approach is better (like Sygate or Winproxy...I forget if those two fully support the OE/hotmail httpmail protocol)
WinProxy has a mixture of NAT and proxy server. It seemed pretty nice. (the Ositis
WinProxy)

I guess there could be other issues. But support of the httpmail protocol is usually the big one.

If you're getting this issue with a single PC, maybe there's a proxy server issue at your ISP.

On another note, I keep getting the following error mesg.
"msimn has caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll/msoe.dll" I've uninstalled and re-installed OE5 and still get the same error. Anybody else with the same problem?

Listen Everybody!

Hotmail cannot be used under Outlook Express under any proxy server full stop. If you are not using a proxy server and still are getting the problem. Make sure that the settings under Internet Explorer Tools then connection are not set to anything other than "Always Dial My Default Connection"

I use a transparent proxy and this should make it work through proxy and it doesn't. So don't keep trying. Remember that some Internet Service Providers make there clients set up a proxy setting even though they Dial A Connection. This also will not work. There has been one way ONLY to allow Hotmail to work through a PROXY and that's if it is set up purely for WINSOCK Only. Any others will interfere.

Phew....Anyhow Catch Ya's L8a

i can really understand your problem. but,
let me tell u this..don't install oe5 again
and again..period..this is my discovery..
the problem is with the windows registry
settings..
here's what u do..(will definitely work)..
start menu > run > regedit >
search for "hotmail" in data, values ..yada..yada..yada..
look carefully for a variable where the
key will have "hotmail" in it's name
and there will be 2 values in the right
frame. there will be a value called hotmail
disabled which will be 1..set that to 0..
having done that, check if the HTTPMail
property in outlook express key is 1 or 0..
this should be 1..any doubts..write me a mail
and i will talk u thru this..

enjoy microsoft..

I have had the 0x800CCC31 error result from 2 different things. First problem was ICQ mail client. The ICQ e-mail client is setup automatically when you install ICQ (at least it did for me). Simple go into the "e-mail preferences" on ICQ and select "use current registered Windows e-mail client".
Then second time I received this was an error due to using a proxy sever setting in IE and outlook. Just go into "tools" in IE 5 browser window, then "internet options" then "connections", and finally "LAN Settings" and uncheck the box that says "use a proxy server". That is how I solved my hotmail prob. You can also use an exception list as in response 26.

I think i have the solution for all the above problems.. at least it worked for me.
Go to the Hotmail account in Outlook Express.
Edit the account, go to the Server tab and change the server with the following:

http://oe.hotmail.com/secure/hmdata

It will work immediatly and download all your existing and new emails.

Giacomo, you're the man! Your solution in message # 35 worked. I had to restart my computer, but after that, it did work. I use cable modem (Road Runner in Houston), and have no proxy server set up in my IE options. I have been writing to Microsoft for months about this and have never gotten any real help. I would have trashed Outlook Express long ago, but it's the only e-mail client that supports (at least on the rare occasions that it worked) web-based e-mail addresses.

Help!!

I have tried everything on this board and have not been able to get my Hotmail to flow into OE 5.

I have a DSL connection and am not certain on some of the setup parameters - this may be my problem.

I know that hotmail is an HTTP server - does it matter what type of server I am operating from?

Thanks for any help that anyone can give.

I was able to get Hotmail to work with OE 5 by:

1. Select "Options" from the "Tools" menu.
2. Click on the "Connection" tab.
3. Click on the "Change" button
4. Click on the "LAN Settings" button.
5. Remove the checkmark before "Use automatic configuration script"

This would work each time but the change was only temporary. The check mark would reappear the next time I started up OE 5. I was able to remove the check mark permanently with the following steps.

6. Click on the Windows "Start" menu and click on "Run"
7. In the "Open" box, type "regsvr32 -u ahiehelp.dll" without the quotation marks.
8. Click "OK"
9. Restart the computer
10. Follow steps 1 to 5 above.

OE 5 and Hotmail now work well together each and every time. If this works for you but you still want to use the proxy but not with Hotmail you could implement the suggestion in response 33 above.

Good luck! Hope this keeps working for me with IE 5.5

I am on a cable modem w/ @Home and was experiencing all the errors listed in these messages... I believe the problem is in the use of proxys... In my case, all it took was this:

- Go to Tools - Internet Options
- Click on the 'Connections' Tab
- Click the 'LAN Settings' Tab
- Check the 'Automatic Detection' Option
- Make sure the other boxes are unchecked
- Press OK

The Hotmail folders should now download into Outlook Express and everything should work!... If not, sorry Charly... I can't help ya!

I have tried ALL solutions suggested here to make OE work with Hotmail, including reinstallation and upgrade of latest OE version, nothing works. I still gat the bloody 0x800CCC31 error! I really would want this to work because the Web sometimes is so slow on my connection that it becomes a great bother to go to the Internet to read messages. Unfortunately, I can't by pass the Proxy, that is what my ISP tells me.

Something puzzling me: do these solutions people are saying worked for them have to be applied on the computer running the proxy (We are using WinProxy on the server computer)or on the end computer I am working on?

IS THERE A SOLUTION THAT WOULD REALLY WORK OTHER THAN HANGING BILL GATES?

Well, I really don't have a fix for any of the problems mentioned here, but a friend of mine is experiencing a simmilar connection problem, only that the error message says "method not allowed" and the error code is 0x800CCC35, not mentioned at all in Microsoft's KB. If anyone has found the same problem and knows how to fix it, I'd be glad to receive an email (it would be faster for me). If not, I still have many ideas in my head to try when I grasp my hands on that machine ;). Seeya my friends,

Andrés

I tried to e-mail a song to a friend through outlook express and it got jammed, I can't send out other e-mails because the jammed one is the first one on the list, I can't delete it or open it, it just froze and "not responding", I had to delete the OUtlook Express from my computer. Does anyone knows where to find Outlook Express 5 for window 98 for me to download it back?

To yoyo,
Hey, you didn´t need to uninstall OE at all! =). It was enough to hide the window where you can see the selected email so OE wouldn´t try to open it. Then you could easily erase it and then restore the window again!.

I don' know if anyone can help with this on
an imac. I am using OE 5 and am having
intermittent problems with sending
emails. They seem to be received OK but
when I try to send them I get an error
saying they cannot be sent to my email
account (and they are not addressed to it)
or it makes a noise implying that it has
sent it, but it hasn't!

Any ideas. When I try a lot of the above
solutions, the menus just don't look the
same. Presumably because this is a mac
verision rather than windows. I am
connecting via a cable network if this
makes any difference.

Thanks for any help you are able to offer.

Thank you Kilroy, response 67 is the only one that did the trick for me. Curiously, another computer on our network having the same versions on IO and OE has another box on the Internet connection wizard. Under "I already have an email connection I'd like to use" there is a box "I'd like to sign up for a new account from" which has a combo box having Hotmail as an option. This option is completely missing from the same form on my computer for reasons unknown.

I tried all the sloutions listed above, and none worked, when i downloaded ie 5.5 outlook suddenly stopped connecting to hotmail servers,,, after trying everything listed above (im not on a proxy) i stopped using it for awhile, after a month i came back and it still didn't work , but i simply double clicked on the online/offline thingy on the toolbar at the bottom of the message window and went offline, when i came back online it started working as it had before, and it has been working properly since

I have been experiencing the same problems with outlook express 5 and Hotmail. I get the message,

"Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Bad Request', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 65535, Error Number: 0x800CCC31"

I have been able to get a temporary fix by unchecking the "Use automatic connection Script" button in the internet control panel. However the next time I use the browser the box gets sutomatically ticked again and the system uses "proxy:8080".
I have been unable to disable this auto-configuration script permanently. Does anybody know how this can be done.?

Error 0x800ccc32

Got mad with that one. Even response #35 didn't work. Then had a problem loging in to Datek. Finally Datek Support told me to go that way:
1)Delete Temporary IT Files>

2)Tools>>>InternetOptions>>>Security>>> Custom Level>>> Scroll all way down and activate>>>Prompt for User Name and Password.

It fixed Datek problem... and OutlookExpress-Hotmail as well.

I found the solution to my problem. Apparently my ISP's modified IE browser software was resetting the proxy everytime I ran Internet Explorer. By uninstalling the ISP modified software, and setting my network/internet settings manually the problem went away. I can now run both my INternet explorer and have hotmail via Outlook Express.

I have tried all of the solutions presented but still have trouble. up until a week ago I would get:
Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x80040154

However, that message would appear at start up, and I could close it and continue to use OE5. I use Free Altavista and another free ISP both used to work now neither. I have no proxy settings. I have upgraded to IE5.5 but was having problems before that.
any ideas?

This problem DEFINATELY has to do with the server. I work for one of those large organizations that inhibits web surfing to certain sites, one of them being Hotmail, and ever since they put their "websense" and other checkpoints, I get the same Bad Request error message. Proof? I contacted my ISP and had no problem downloading folders and using Outlook Express and Hotmail.

i found this solution for my problem from the help topics in the msn-hotmail site. all i did was to follow the instructions below then i deleted my previous hotmail account and i got to download my emails right away into outlook express. hope this helps.

In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools menu.
In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add, and then click Mail.
Use the following information to complete the Internet Connection Wizard:
On the Internet E-mail Address page, click the option I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use. Type in your Hotmail address.

On the E-mail Server Name page, click HTTP in the My incoming mail server is ... box.

In the box My HTTP service provider is, click Hotmail. No other information should be entered on this page.

Follow the remaining instructions to finish the wizard.

#78 worked for me. I was getting the Authorization required error. I changed the 2)Tools>>>InternetOptions>>>Security>>> Custom Level>>> Scroll all way down and activate>>>Prompt for User Name and Password.

I then re-started OE and it downloaded my folders! thanks this has been bugging me for 6 months.

If you want to solve your Hotmail/Outlook problems, the best solution is NOT to use either Hotmail or Outlook.

Microsoft use a HTTP mail server for Hotmail which is not supported by most other email clients. Therefore most of us are likely to try to use Outlook - which is of course exactly what Microsoft wants.

Why they don't offer POP3 or IMAP access to their mail servers is, in my opinion, to try and prevent us using other email client software instead of their crappy Outlook.

To solve all problems just ditch both! I use yahoo's email service with Eudora and I rarely have any problems. There are a plethora of other email services and clients out there.

Why restrict your choice to Microsoft?!?!?!

Also, consider the number of viruses out there that target Outlook. Why put yourselves through all of this agony for a service that you can get more easily elsewhere?

Just a few thoughts.

Lips.

Plot thickens.

I have mutliple hotmail accounts and all but my main one works and loads all folders and emails perfectly. When I repetivily input the main one the errors occur. I suspect it is a registation error on the orignally email address prior to loading the upgrade to 5.5 recently released.

I was getting error 0x800CCC33, "Forbidden". I do not use a proxy and my password is valid. Several people had success with response #35.

It is my duty to point out the line in #35 is wrong:
http://oe.hotmail.com/secure/hmdata

This gives another error "Resource not available". The correct version is:
http://oe.hotmail.com/secure/hmdata.asp

Not that did me any good, I still had 0x800CCC33 "Forbidden".

I'm not sure exactly what fixed it, but here is what I did:
1. Delete hotmail account (go to Tools/Accounts.../Mail, click Hotmail, then Remove)
2. Sat in shock as I realized my archived files were erased with the account!
3. Restart computer
4. Set up a new, existing account (go to Tools/Accounts.../Mail/Add/Mail... then enter email address and password)
5. Enjoyed a moment of bliss as my previously removed files majicly reappeared!
6. Send and receive now work great!

I don't know if it was just restarting my computer, or re-creating my account (or both) that did it, but it worked for me so there's your free nickel's worth of advice.

Just install Client for Microsoft Networks and is done.

I have the same problem as Robert (#87), but have tried everything and nothing works. Deleted hotmail account, restarted, put it back in- no moment of bliss. Still "forbidden". I can access my account by going to www.hotmail.com, so all is not lost, but OE is still no good.

I never had this problem til I had to get rid of AltaVista. Now using NetZero and Juno, and get the error0x800CCC33. I've tried almost all the fixes listed, and no luck as yet. Is there a killer fix? I'll bet it would work great with MSN ISP for $22 a month. I like Hotmail since I won't have to keep changing email addresses with ISP's but don't like how it functions.
