Can anybody tell me what will happen if the file size exceed 2G? Microsoft only tell me the max file size but it does not say what will happen if it exceed the 2gig limit. Any help will be great. Thanks.

Most W9x programs have a 2G size limit. Some video programs and others have a method of making larger files. I assume that the file is truncasted to last whole record before the 2G limit. The 2G limit is caused by the 32 bit math and the max size of clusters. These numbers are not fully utilized because the size of the FAT becomes to wasteful.
As an aside. Why are you letting the file get that big? How are you backing up?

I don't know what Outlook Express will do when a file exceeds 2GB, but it could be something bad. Windows will not move or copy any file over 2GB.

It is not my computer that I am fixing. The customer is having random problems (lost files, etc.) with his email and I told him that the max file size for outlook express is 2gig max but he does not believe that is the cause of the problems and he does not want to get rid of some of the emails. At this point there is nothing I can do for him but I want to make I am correct as to what the source of the problem is. Thanks.

Outlook Express should never approach that size. It is a database program that isn't all that stable. You are asking for problems when the .DBX files get too big.
I have heard from people with 200mb and no problems, but personally, mine never get over 20mb.
Always manually compact OE. If they haven't been compacted, that should reduce their size. Do it only when you are OFFLINE. Or if you click File and choose Work offline.
Click File->Folder. Then choose Compact All Folders. Do not check Compact messages in the background. This can lead to lost emails. (Tools->Options. Maintenance Tab)
Do not interupt OE while it is compacting. Best to just walk away from the computer until it finishes. A malfunction can cause a loss of emails.
Definitely do some backing up, if the emails are important.

I'm terrible at deleting emails, some go back to year 2000. I have just done a Find *.dbx which includes all my emails and a few other invisible boxes besides. The total is 275M and I have no problems.
What I'm saying is that 2GB is an almost unbelievable amount. Are you absolutely certain the emails get anywhere near this, and if so how did you measure this size?

Which DBX file is actually that big? They can't all be 2.8Gigs. The Deleted Items.dbx can be deleted. Any of them that he doesn't have emails in the corresponding folder can be deleted. Any that he doesn't care about losing the emails in the folder can be deleted.
For the rest of his folders, create new folders in OE, move the emails from other folders to fill the new folders. Hint: Keep the folders well below 2Gigs. Once a folder is empty, it can be deleted.
I would use DOS to delete - Windows might complain about files that big.
Once you delete the DBX files, there wouldn't be any need to compact (of course).
Keep us posted. I am interested to see what, if any, other problems come up due to the file size.

Better add this, just figured you would know. But maybe you don't.
Do not delete Folders.dbx
Do not delete Pop3uidl.dbxsekirt

Windows might balk at actual compacting. Deleting the DBX files will serve the same purpose - new, empty DBX files will be created the next time OE is started. I would stick with DOS - if that doesn't work, then try using Windows to delete the DBX files. Be sure OE is closed when deleting. If deleting fails in both DOS and Windows, then try compacting.
In OE->Files->Folder->Compact All Folders. Be sure you are offline or click work offline. Do not run other programs while compacting. Do not interupt the compacting process. Emails can be permanently destroyed if compacting malfunctions.

Instead of compacting first, can you export in parts to a series of backups sorted by date, etc. It would be terrible to lose it all. I haven't used outlook express for a while.

If he can follow my instructions about moving the emails into other folders he won't lose any of them.

Sorry to say that the customer took the computer back to take it to the other shop instead. I explained to him as much as I can to back up what he needs and put on the CD or dvd for him, once it is backup he can delete old stuff from the outlook, but he does not care to hear what i have to say, he thinks the other shop can fix the problem.

hi, i have lost all my emails after running the compacting tool...
is there any way i can retrive or restore the data...
no mails at all in my inbox... :(
