Comment:
I have obtained a compaq LTE 5400,P150 notebook from an auction which has a 2.1gb hd with no operating system on it. The notebook has no Floppy or CD drive fitted but has the usual serial and parallel ports. Is there an easy way to get the OS onto it? Thereafter I should be able to load other stuff via MS breifcase (I hope). Many thanks.
I used a zip drive on the parallel port and copied Win98 in pieces to a folder on my laptop's HD, then installed it. Took a while but got the job done. Could try taking the laptop's HD out, put it in your pc as the only drive, install the op system to it and put it back in the laptop.
I similarly used a zip drive to copy win3.1, and from there used it to install a PMCIA CD-ROM. I found it quicker to install win98 from the CD than copying over win98's huge files.
But if you don't have the stuff, do what O.B. says with copying the files, it's the easiest way, altho a bit time consuming, but it gets what you want done.
Does the laptop boot up to the DOS prompt? If so, you should be able to get installation files from your desktop to the laptop using a program such as laplink, which can install itself on the laptop. All you need is a serial or parallel file transfer cable (note: this is not the same as a printer cable). Parllel works faster.
