opening Email attachments from Mac to PC

Hi-
I own a PC running Windows 98. I frequently receive email attached files from MAC users and cannot open them. Frequently the appear with icon I don't recognize or simple appear as Windows logo icons that then ask me to identify what program to open it with...never works no matter what I do.
Is there software I could install on my PC that would recognize/convert, and open these attachments? If you know of available software, please identify it by name/manufacturer. If you know any other remedy, please advise. Thanks, Todd
